Hi - I've been hanging around here for a couple of weeks, and find this site very helpful. I have an anxiety disorder, and when I'm anxious my bp goes up. When I am very strict with my diet, it is in the 120s/70. But when I get anxious - it can go up to 170/100. Like for instance when I have surgery, or dental work.
At my physicals, it is usually 130s/90s, so my dr. doesn't worry about it. But I'm having surgery in Novembr, and so I asked him to give me something to help stabilize my bp. I've tried Norvasc - oh my gosh, it tried to kill me! Migraine headache for 3 days, strange dreams, and heart pounding in the middle of the night. I tried Bystolic, but I had an asthma attack. He gave me Lisinopril 5 mg, but I just haven't been able to make myself try it. I'm exhausted and leary of all the drugs now. I would rather use natural methods - I'm trying to be on the DASH diet, but it seems really hard for me right now. I did get a set of CDs for breathing exercises, and they are wonderful. They help with my anxiety, but I'm not sure how much good they are doing my bp. I take my bp every day, and it's usually 138/85 give or take a few. I'm very appreciative of this site, and just wanted to share my story. Blessings, Valph Posted on 10/17/09, 08:10 pm |

Hi - I also have anxiety disorder and now have problems with my bp. I am on two different medications for it and still I am having problems conquering it. What to do? I thought all this time it was the anxiety that caused it, which of course it does at times, but mostly I think my health sucks more than I would like to admit! I am 37 and have always taken good care of my health. Exercise, yoga, meditation, green tea, blah blah blah. I guess, to be optimistic, all these things do help more than I realize. If I stopped them I would probably feel worse. But it sucks. I didn't think I would deal with this type of problem until I was much older. What about you?

I think the drug companies are responsible for setting the new "normal" bp range at 120/80 - a goal that guarantees most of the adult population is going to be taking their drugs at some point between 30 and 80. I don't believe it's a realistic goal, and in fact causes a lot of us to become fixated on our bp - which of course makes it higher.
I finally gave in and decided to take medication, and am now on Lisinopril. It's been a week today, and for the first time in years, I feel I've regained some control of my life. I bought a CD set with breathing exercises designed to naturally lower blood pressure. I found they help me a great deal with my anxiety. So I definitely will continue using them to help me cope when I'm stressed. But they didn't seem to lower my bp much. It's been really frightening to admit I have high blood pressure. But it was a great comfort to find this site, and find out I'm not alone with my anxiety over it. Thanks for reaching out to me, I hope I can be of some help to you too. Blessings - valph

You are right about the drug companies causing hbp but not by just playing with the numbers. My bp used to run 140/90, spiking as high as 195/115. When it went above 145, I would get a headache. Now it runs 110/68 with a resting pulse of 65. I have checked it as low as 103/53 and pulse of 58. I have never taken bp meds and never will after reading the side effects and talking to people that are experiencing the side effects.
