Hello I am new to the site.
I wanted to know how it is possible that my blood pressure monitor reading can tell me I am 164/84 and then take it 2 minutes later and it be 116/81 ? I am confused as to how my blood pressure can be so drastically different in a matter of minutes. Has anyone experienced this? Posted on 09/27/09, 09:09 am |

i'v had that happen to me . i'v heard that blood pressure can rise or fall within a few minutes time . i used to take my blood pressure every few minutes i was so worried about it but the doctor told me to stop doing that . i only take it in the mornings and afternoon now , and at night before i go to bed. if you have been cleaning house or walking around the top number is going to be higher .try to sit still for about 10 min. before you take it . xoxxox

And it could be the machine - I will have different readings depending on what position I'm sitting in, where I have my arm resting, even if my legs are crossed. If I have a drastic difference in readings like that, I take it again. The third one is bound to be close to one or the other - and that would indicate to me that is the more correct reading.
I have had my blood pressure go up or go down 30 pts in a matter of minutes. Especially if I just sit down and take it, without taking time to relax and let everything settle down from walking around.

to get a close reading...you need to sit down feet flat on the floor no moving, talking, eating,smoking...and waite 15 min after you sit down..take it 3 times..but in between times waite 10 min..then the bp montier will work..there not right on the nose..but yes they will show change..i took mine to the gpdoc it was only lower 5 points on the systolic!! but belive this or not you can stand up and take it..it say 105/75....then sit down waite 5 min and get a reading of 140/85..ur blood p chages dramatically..meaning that if you have high blood p this means you will see this alot..compared to someone thats normal ,,theres dont flusuaite like ours does/..theres runs basically even if there stressed its in this range 120/80 115/75 the higest at timesw may get 125/70......mine at times and im on 3 meds aday..in the am..its 140/88 then 20 min later 125/70 then took it a few min ago was 115/66 ........we vary fast they dont its the nature of the beast...

I read my blood pressure manual and it said to wait a few minutes at least in between readings because the artery becomes depressed after taking a reading and so the machine may not give an accurate number.
I also have trouble with knowing how frequently to take a reading because I find the more I take it, the more I focus on it and become anxious. A bad reading will affect my mood for the whole day. I am trying to not worry so much about the exact numbers, just focus gradually getting better but the readings change so damn much it is frustrating! Plus I am only 37 so I feel like I am much too young to be having this kind of problem.

My blood pressure machine said to wait fifteen minutes between readings.
Maybe your machine is the same. T

It makes me so anxious that I want to ban my monitor for now.
As Kate says, it also affects my mood so for now I will stay away from it because I just don't want to deal with it emotionally. Does anyone suffer from "white coat syndrome"?

I suffer from White coat syndrom. I am scared of the BP machine at home or at the DR....I always feel different (strssed, anxious) when I take my BP so feel like my reading is probably never acurate for my day to day life when not hooked up to the BP machine.
