" yes, Goof, they do lower bp - though I was given this mostly by my doc for swollen ankles which, after a year, was discovered to be caused by Adalat Retard and my ankles went down. I have now stopped the diuretic. However, I do know a friend who is on this alone for lowering bp and it certainly does that. btw I was taken off atenolol because it has been found to cause diabetes? just checking....take care... "

" I take a combo pill with a diuretic for water retention problems. It keeps my blood pressure under control and keeps the swelling down also. I can't hardly wear shoes when I run out. "

" Hi my friend, I have been taking hydrochlorothiazide for several weeks now - I too was really scared about it, I posted about it too. However, it was either that or risk having a stroke each and every day...my BP is about 20 points lower than it was, and I feel better. I have to drink a lot of water, though to stay hydrated but have had no other side effects. I am going to a cardiologist next week to see what might be causing the HBP in the first place. "

" I too have been on HCTZ twice now and it's great. It's not as drastic as you might think. It may be the extra little boost you need to get your BP to where you want it. Good luck and I hope it's working for you! :) "

" Iam glad that you are taking your fluid pill.Fluid pills do several things.Reduce swelling, removes built up fluid from around the heart and lowers BP.
Take it and hydrate they do a good job and well worth the effort of using them. "
