Discussion:
atenolol is addictive and will kill you

I was taking 10 mg/day of atenolol for 3 months. It slowed my maximum pulse down 64 bpm. If I did anything strenuous I would get asthma like symptoms because my body could not get enough oxygen. I'm 6'1 and was 185 lbs when I started this. I had to slow down to avoid asthma, and put on 5 pounds from the lack of exercise. I could see this was a downward spiral.

Atenolol reduced my maximum metabolism, so I was gaining weight. If this kept up, my health would get worse. After a while I asked the doc if I could skip a dose when I had hard work to do. This worked great, I could get work done, my heart rate was normal again. But the great news is that my BP was lower than ever with just good exercise. So for the past 3 weeks I have not taken any atenolol and have been doing chores like crazy and swimming a lot. The results have been great. My weight is dropping nicely and my BP is holding at 125/80.

The diet is next. There could be something to this diet and exercise idea!

OK, maybe saying atenolol is addictive and will kill you is a bit of an exaggeration, but it seemed to me that once I was on it, there was immediate relief, but it would lead to long term weight gain and an overall worsening of health. For me it was a life altering drug, and a great wake up call.

I hope others find this useful.

" how long here you on it? Most people have to be weaned off atenolol. Going cold turkey can cause a rebound effect. Maybe being on such a low does it didn't mater. Im glad your doing good. I started taking atenolol about 6 years, I started with 50 mgs, and am now down to about 6mgs. Every time Ive lowered the does I feel like im having withdraw symptoms. Im a little scared to just stop taking it. Im glad you were able to get off of it so easy. "

" I was on it for 3 months. I started at 20 mg, but immediately cut that in half after talking with my doctor since my bp was too low.at 10 mg my bp was ideal, but I could not get my heart rate up while doing chores, then asthma would kick in. I tried 5 mg a bit, but the real trick was hard work and chores that work up a real sweat.

The great news is my weight is getting closer to ideal for my height and build, it feels good. My 21 yr old is helping with my diet, and with some work, maybe I can drop the crestor and lisonopril!

Good diet and exercise is better than meds, just more work. "

" I'm going to do what I can to get off of meds. It surprised me when my doc said I didn't need to change my lifestyle, just take these meds, but the meds changed my lifestyle, and the trend was bad.

Mr. Postman, I don't know about O2 sat issues, but I did get light headed playing the bagpipes at the local Solstice parade! "
