Hi there, I've recently been officially diagnosed with HBP - today's reading was 146/93 - I found out in March and did what I could through diet and exercise and supplements but it didn't work. I do not add sodium to my foods, limit sodium already in foods, don't eat processed foods, no caffeine/soda/alcohol and I don't smoke (although I did but quit 5 years ago)> I began an exercise routine of walking a mile a day, then went to 2 miles a day. i tried jogging but my knee gave out so had to resort to PIlates until it healed, then I began biking (much easier on the knee) and now bike an hour a night (or anywhere from 5-9+ miles - today was 9 and 3/4 miles). I also am a mom to 8, am going to college to be an RN one day when I grow up (lol), and have a hubby who's on unemployment and going back to college in the fall - so no, I have zero stress in my life (LOL!). My new GP's office prescribed me Lisinopril, but I'm having a really hard time wanting to take it and wondering if I should ask for a different script. With this med apparently I cannot eat high potassium foods, and this is a huge problem. The beginning of my life alteration in March, I began a raw food diet (veggies), simply stated - a vegan diet. I've since altered it to add in some lean chicken breast here and there, but I don't consume dairy, or anything like that. No eggs. SO most of my diet consists of raw or very lightly cooked vegetables. I'm wondering how the heck I am going to eat if I have to restrict my potassium intake?? can anyone please give me an idea what your diet is like with this medication? I will be calling the drs. office in the morning to discuss this, as I did mention to the PA (who I'm not overly impressed with) that I did eat a high raw diet at one point and that my diet consists of mostly raw vegetable foods even now. Any help is appreciated. I nearly had an emotional meltdown this evening about this....which I'm sure shot my BP up some more. Oh joy.

My doc said just not to take potassium supplements or use salt substitutes, which I hate anyway, not to limit foods.
I had to start Lisoprinil because my BP is running high even after exercise and dietary changes and taking garlic and niacin. I used to take HCTZ but I got awful foot and legs cramps with it and my blood pressure got too low.

I am taking that medication along with some others and haven't heard anything about not eating anything with potassium. In fact after my congested heart failure in 2006, I ate nothing but bananas because I was so scared, I didn't want to eat anything else.

I take it also and have not heard anything about the potassium.
Years ago, 140/90 was considered the start of HBP, so try not to get overly worried. I know doctors want it lower nowadays.

let me ease ur mind...as long as you kidneys are working and ur gfr is filtering good at 59 or above..and ther creatine is good...the lab reff rate on this potassium is ( 3.0-5.0) meaning that when both kidneys work well then the kidey release what pottssium it dont need..if it needs more and ur closer to the 3.0 then it will hold onto it to keep the heart in full supply..the only thing you dont want to do with the med lisinopril is take the potassium chloride sat this can case to much potassium...BUT REST ASSURED TO YOU AS LONG AS YOUR KIDNEYS ARE WORKING GREAT THEN UR FINE NOW IF YOUR GPDOC HAS TOLD YOU DIFF THEN DO WHAT E OR SHE SAYS..BUT ASK THEM WHY??? CUZ THE ONLY THING IT COULD BE WOULD BE THE GFR THE FILTERING PROCESS THAT CLEAN THE JUNK OUT OF THE BLOOD THEN THE BLOOD FILTERS BACK THREW THE KIDNEYS..MEANING THE JUNK IS TURNED INTO URINE..I KNOW IM ON THE MED LISINOPRIL I HAVE JUST ONE KIDNEY I EAT ONLY 900-1200 A DAY OF POTTU IUSSUM ..I HAD GENERAL CHEMISTRY PROFILE 2 MONTHES AGO MY POTASSIUM WAS 4.2...I HAVE HAD IT OVER THE 5.0 IT WAS AT 1 TIME 5.4 AND ALONG TIME AGO IT WA BELOW 3.0 I HAD A DRINKING PROBLEM AND DEHYDRATED SO U HAVE NO WORRIES HAS FAR AS IM CONCERNED..I AM HOWEVER CONCERNED THAT THE GPDOC DIDNT EXPLAIN THIS IN SET AIL AS I HAVE TO YOU..IM, NOT A MD I WANTED TO BE..I BEEN IN MEDICAL 13 YRS A HOBBY TO HELP ,OTHERS..REMEMBER NO POTASSIUM CHLORIDE.. I ALSO TRY TO STAY AWAY FROM ALOT OF EXTRA YOGURTS..LIKE potatos ARE 600 MG'S PER..AND BRAN FLAKES ARE 170 PER SERVING BANANAS ARE RICH AS WELL BUT NOT AS RICH AS POTATOES.....IF YOU EVER START OUT OF NO WEAR HAVING MUSCLE CRAMPS AND JUST DONT FEEL GOOD AND ALOT OF FAIGE OR REAL BRIGHT YELLOW OR GOLD URINE TO OFTEN DURING THE DAYTIME AFTER DRINK WATER BE SEEN....JAMES..
