New here, Q? about eating on Lisinopril

Hi there, I've recently been officially diagnosed with HBP - today's reading was 146/93 - I found out in March and did what I could through diet and exercise and supplements but it didn't work. I do not add sodium to my foods, limit sodium already in foods, don't eat processed foods, no caffeine/soda/alcohol and I don't smoke (although I did but quit 5 years ago)> I began an exercise routine of walking a mile a day, then went to 2 miles a day. i tried jogging but my knee gave out so had to resort to PIlates until it healed, then I began biking (much easier on the knee) and now bike an hour a night (or anywhere from 5-9+ miles - today was 9 and 3/4 miles). I also am a mom to 8, am going to college to be an RN one day when I grow up (lol), and have a hubby who's on unemployment and going back to college in the fall - so no, I have zero stress in my life (LOL!). My new GP's office prescribed me Lisinopril, but I'm having a really hard time wanting to take it and wondering if I should ask for a different script. With this med apparently I cannot eat high potassium foods, and this is a huge problem. The beginning of my life alteration in March, I began a raw food diet (veggies), simply stated - a vegan diet. I've since altered it to add in some lean chicken breast here and there, but I don't consume dairy, or anything like that. No eggs. SO most of my diet consists of raw or very lightly cooked vegetables. I'm wondering how the heck I am going to eat if I have to restrict my potassium intake?? can anyone please give me an idea what your diet is like with this medication? I will be calling the drs. office in the morning to discuss this, as I did mention to the PA (who I'm not overly impressed with) that I did eat a high raw diet at one point and that my diet consists of mostly raw vegetable foods even now. Any help is appreciated. I nearly had an emotional meltdown this evening about this....which I'm sure shot my BP up some more. Oh joy.

" was this reading at the docter's office? Have you ever took your reading at home? Yes your blood pressure is high, but was it higher before you lost weight and started your new way of eatting? Sense your bp isn't in a serious high I onder if you can talk to your docter about waiting another month before you start your meds (as long as you monitor it at home) and see if it comes down more doing the natural things your doing. If your docter says yes, maybe you can go to a natural docter to see if theres anything else you can add to your diet such as garlic, grape seed extract, etc. that might help. It sounds like your on the right track. But talk to your docter, he may want you to take the bpm while you continue your life style change and adjust the dose as needed. You may not have to be on them long if you keep up the good work. "

" unfortunately it was almost exactly the same before I made these alterations. I've taken garlic as well, very faithfully. My gynocologist (who officially diagnosed me with HBP) said that they'd hate to see what my pressure would be if I *weren't* doing all that I am now with diet change, overall diet and exercise. "

" Went through much of what you're going through about 6 months ago. Who told you to limit potassium? My doctor said no potassium supplements, but don't worry about food. I've been on a diet rich in potassium for years - mostly vegetarian, but I eat fish. Weight is very good. Exercise a lot. So far, so good. The lisinopril has worked - maybe too well. My blood pressure gets as low as 96/59. It rarely goes high (130s.) It was 148/88 when I began treatment with lisinopril. Good luck. "

" I go to a doctor who practices both Eastern and Western medication. He has classes/support groups once a week for different health issues and i attend both the one for hypertension and for being overweight. the Hypertansion class gives us excercise specifically related to BP so that we can conciously bring it down.. I am with you, fired a doctor because I had told her I wanted to try Lifestyle changes before meds and she prescribed for me anyway. my current doc says it can be controlled 9 times out of 10 without meds. " thanks for the information and support. I called the drs. office this morning and expressed my concern re: the potassium. They told me to just eat in moderation (duh) and things should be fine. Because a build up of potassium or over intake of potassium can cause issues (i.e. heart attack) I asked them to perform a blood test to make sure I don't get a high reading. This will be in six weeks, so we'll address any issues about the potassium again at that point. I'll just eat as I have been, but keeping a more vigilant eye on my consumption. I've created an account on FitDay.com to track my food and my exercise, so perhaps that will help! "

" vonny, its hard to get going when you have no energy. I am not a big veggie person and if I do eat them they are usually cooked where all the nutrion is cooked out of them. I bought a jucier and its pretty good. I juice all kinds of veggies, including broccoli and by adding a little fruit to it, you cant even taste the veggies. My bp is staying at a better place and im actually feeling more energy. They always say to incorporate more fruit and veggies in your diet to help lower your bp and give you more energy. Juicing is a great way to do it. "

" great suggestion! You don't always have to get a juicer though. If you have a blender, this works as well. Start out with your greens, like spinach, romaine, etc. Depending on your meds, you can add in a banana or another type of fruit to sweeten it up. Just add some water to the spinach/romaine and let it chop up really well, then add the fruit. Drink it with a straw and you'll probably find you like them! You will definitely see an improvement in your energy level when you add fresh green veggies to your diet. Get rid of all the saturated fat and sugary items too, these don't do anything but drag you down. Adding fresh live veggies can really make a difference in your outlook on life, your energy level and will balance out your weight and any hormones that are askew. "
