MY DR. GAVE ME LISINOPRIL 10MG, COULD,NT TAKE IT, DOWN TO 5MG STILL HORRIBLE STOMACK ACHES, TIRED , DEPRESSED EVEN BINGING ON THIS STUFF. I HAVE HEART PALPATATIONS SO MUCH ANXIETY IN ME TAKING MEDICINE THAT CAN KILL YOU. SO THIS MORNING I SPLIT THE 5MG IN HALF TO 2.5. SIDE EFFECTS NOT AS BAD, JUST UPPER STOMACK HURTS. AND FEEL TIRED. I,AM AN AVID WALKER FOR 20 YEARS. FOR 4 DAYS ALL I FELT LIKE DOING IS SLEEPING. I RESENT IT SO MUCH I,AM 67 IN GOOD HEALTH HAVE HAD EVERY HEART TEST, BLOOD TEST, X RAY OF HEART NORMAL SIZE. I WAS BORN WITH A HOLE IN MY HEART JUST FOUND OUT 2 YRS. AGO SAID HOLE HEALED VERY COMMON. I HAVE ATRIAL STEPTUM DEFECT. ALL I KNOW ALL THESE HBP. MEDS THE SIDE EFFECTS ARE JUST UNREAL TO ME. I HAVE HEART MONITOR ON FOR A MONTH. IT IS ALL ANXIETY. I JUST WANT TO FEEL NORMAL. NOT OLD AND TIRED CAN ANYONE RECOMMEND A HBP TO ME, I COULD ASK MY DR. TO CHANGE TO. THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF THEM BUT THE CARDIO. DR. WANTS ME ON AN ACE INHIBITOR.. DOES ANY ONE JUST TAKE A (WATER PILL) I READ THEY WERE VERY EASY ON BODY, VERY LITTLE SIDE EFFECTS. PLEASE SOME ONE ANSWER THIS POST FOR ME. SO DEPRESSED. THANKS ZZZ

Has your doctor given you a specific reason why he wants you on an ACE inhibitor? You may want to suggest to him that you switch to another drug in the same class if Lisinopril is really causing issues for you.
And yes, there are many people whose blood pressure is controlled by the use of a diuretic (water pill). They are inexpensive and in general have very few side effects except for increased urination since the drug works by ridding your body of excess fluid. You can also ask your doctor about seeing if this type of medication is an option for you. Let us know how it goes and keep in touch!

Diuretics are very effective, Other than their renowned side effects on sexual function for men, there is the risk in some people of depleting potassium too much, which is why your doctor will need to do period blood tests. They deplete my potassium too much, despite being the most effective antihypertensive, so unfortunately I cannot take them.

Hi JohnD1,
I learned something new today. I didn't know that diuretics could affect male sexual function. I was aware of that as a side effect of beta blockers but not diuretics. I knew about the potassium issue and it sounds like you must have a real sensitivity. I take a potassium-sparing diuretic, HCTZ (generic hydrochlorothiazide). Did you have issues even with that type of diuretic?

YEA I WENT TO A CARDIOLOGIST ALL MY TEST WERE NORMAL.I TOLD HIM HOW DEPRESSED I FELT TAKING ALL THOSE DIFFERANT HBP MEDS. HE SAID PEOPLE WHO SUFFER DEPRESSION LIKE ME, I TAKE PROAZ THAT HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE MEDS, CAN CAUSE DEPRESSION, HE SAID AS HEALTHY AS I,AM AND ALL MY WALKING NEVER OUT OF BREATH ALL HEART TEST GOOD. TO TRY DIET, HE SAID AS A HEART DR. HE TRIES NOT TO GIVE THOSE MEDSS, OUT UNLESS ABSOLUTLEY NESSARARY. I TOLD HIMON 2 STRAIGHT DAYS I WOULD HAVE BEEN OUT WALKING , FRESH HAIR , MY DOGS WITH ME FEELING HEALTHY. AND HERE I WAS LAYING ON A BED DEPRESSED SICK TO MY STOMACK, HEADACHE SO BAD.HE DID,NT LIKE THAT. HE TOLD ME UNLESS MY BLOOD PRESSURE WAS HIGH ALL THE TIME, IT IS NOT NESSARARY FOR ME TO BE MADE SICK BY THESE PILLS. SO I,AM DOING AN EASY DIET TO CUT DOWN ON SALT. ALL THESE REGULAR MDS THAT IS THE FIRST THING THEY DO ONE READING IN THEIR OFFICE PERSCRIPTION FOR POTENT HBP MEDS. THIS IS A HEART DR. HE DOES NOT BELIEVE IN IT. I FEEL SO GOOD TODAY. NOT SICK NO PVC,S. BUT IT IS 105 OUT SO I CAN,T WALK. THANKS GUYS FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT ZZZ

Just noticed your post. Hydrochlorothiazide is NOT a potassium sparing diuretic, it is a potassium depleting one. I tried hctz in combination with a potassium sparing diuretic and even on a tiny dose this did not work well and gave me an upset lower digestive system. Tried another combination diuretic after that, and it was just the same. I have tried numerous diuretics and they all end up depleting my potassium. However, I am sensitive to the potassium depletion effect due to another condition I have. John
