I'm married to a wonderful man who consistently has BP readings in the range of 170/100.
He does not want to take medication to control this. What is his prognosis? Posted on 04/11/09, 12:04 am |

i know how he feels i hate taking the meds i have had to start on a fourth now ggrrrr. I was exstremely anxious and my bp was over 200/115 its lowest on 3 meds was 136/82 i asked if i could come of the meds but was told no. last week it read 160/90 and landed myself on a 4th med gggrrrr. I suppose if you have high untreated bp for a number of years it could do damage and he could be looking at a heart attack or stroke. I am not that educated about this it just my doctor said to me meds or a possible stroke!!!!

if that is his average reading he needs to do something to bring it down. He should talk to his docter about ways to bring it down naturally. Depending on his risk facters, his docter may give him a few months to see if he can bring it down before putting him on meds. If he cant do it naturally, he'll probable need to go on meds. He could go see a natural docter and see what they suggest.

Thanks. I think you're right--from my reading on other sites I think three of the four biggest risks are kidney damage, heart attack and stroke. Was the fourth aneurysm? I can't remember.
I even saw that one site called his numbers an emergency and he ought to seek immediate medical attention! It'll be an uphill battle getting him to see a doctor. He has agreed to test his BP regularly, however. That was quite a fight! One step at a time, I guess.

if its not taking care of he will suffer in the future..his arteries will weaken...both #,s are high the top # is 5 times the risk of a future stroke..my doc put me on a drug that keeps the top # at 130 or below..his bottom # is up but not way up,..but left untreated you never know when its up..ive had blood p problems since 19..im 46..been on difft meds im just use to the side effects..why dont he want to keep this under control..this can get bad!! people that have blood p problems and are on good meds bp goes up at times.. but someone whos got blood p high and not treated it can go sky high,..might take 20 yrs to develop might take 1 week?? should get on something..theres blood p meds out there now that dont cause side effects if do there low..the older ones will like im on but im use to it.. good day to you

Thanks.
He and I have an agreement--I'm diabetic and overweight, so I record what I eat every day that he records his blood pressure. We only discuss what's going on every three months. (This is an improvement, as we sort of didn't talk about our health issues for the first dozen years of our marriage! ;D ) This is a new agreement, so I've only been seeing his numbers for about six weeks. One of my favorite sites on the internet is and what it said about hypertension scared me, so I thought I'd talk to folks who live with it everyday. Again, thanks!
