I have been taking atenolol (beta blocker) for years. Now I am adding HCTZ, a thiazide type diuretic. Is anyone out there taking this combo and can you offer any advice as far as potassium supplementation? Have you had any side effects? What are they and how did you handle them?

Thanx so much.

" I used to take that combination. It did deplete my potassium. I just foods that were high in potassium. At one point I had to take the liquid potassim. Banana's and potatoes are a good source. I had cramping in the calves of my legs due to it being low. "

" I just started tacking HCTZ (50 MG) along with K-Dur (20 MG) for potassium since HCTZ can deplete that. I'm taking this to counter act the side effects of Lyrica - which I take for cronic nerve pain. I take both this 3 times a week (M, W & F). My BP isn't high - so we'll see what happens. Will keep you guys posted! "

" I take Atenolol and HCTZ. I follow a low sodium diet and have no problems although I should add that my diet includes potatoes, poultry, fish, fresh mushrooms, and cantaloupe - not because of the potassium they contain but because I love them all...and luckily, they contain potassium. "
