Applying Turmeric Topically?

I couldn't manage the swelling in my groin anymore so this morning, I decided to go ahead and apply turmeric topically to see if that would help ease the bumps on my groin. I wasn't sure the best way to "mix" it so I just added a bit of water and stirred it into a paste. Is there a better way to do it? I have heard of mixing it with a live yogurt but didn't have any on hand. Have any of you had success with topical Turmeric applications? It actually seems to be slightly better already so that is reassuring. My entire groin will be stained yellow but I would rather stains than pains! Does the yellow staining go away after a while? I would hate to have to explain that one next time I see my Dr.
