Advice:
Nexium not working

Hello all. As I was refilling my pill boxes for the week, I started wondering about my Nexium. I've been on prescription Zantac in the early days, (early 1980) Then prescription Prilosec from the late 1990's until about a yr ago. I had a couple of really severe episodes that put me in the hospital, with uncontrollable vomiting/retching/diarehha/ pain/profuse sweating.Typically this would last for about 3 days. I've had a colonoscopy, and two endoscopys, as well as upper and lower GI. The only thing that showed was a 'substantial hiatal hernia'. So she switched me to Nexium, which worked wonders for a while. Now this is the gross part, and wondering if anyone else had the same? For about an hr after eating I can still feel the food laying close to my chest-I can burp the food I'd just eaten back up, undigested. This is really bothering me, as well as having heartburn with burping. Of course I was also given the catch-all IBS diagnosis. Sorry for being so lengthy, I 'm trying to decide if I should ask my Dr for an increase on the Nexium? Thanks!~Vicki

" Had the same type of problem for several yrs. Had scope,MRI and Upper GI done 2 yrs ago and the Sliding Hiatal Hernia didnt show up that time. Became worse with any activiy, felt like I was having stomach spasms at top of stomach just below diapham.Reflux became an increasing problem. Dr did another upper GI this past March and the Sliding Hiatal Hernia showed up. On April 29th, had surgery to repair,, so glad I did. I too was put on differnt meds but, not effective. Before the surgery, I was eating Tums like candy..not good. The procedure they did was a Laprascopic Nissen. Hope this helps!! Hugs. "

" The first step is learning to deal with the hernia, my suggestion is to stop the nexium and learn to control your diet with eating foods that are easily digestable and drinking lots of water to keep the acid down. I too had this and still do at times but I now understand why. Due to all this I suffered panic attacks and was always scared I was going to choke to death. I took me 2 years to get it all under control. Now as long as I stay away from process foods and eat smaller meals, I am fine. i go up to 2 years between attacks and it is usually my fault for eating something stupid! Also about gross, the nexium was decreasing my acid production so much that the food was going through my digestion track and coming out undigested! So now I drink warm water with a bit of lemon juice to help digest the food and it seems to work! Just keep getting up every morning and know that you will find relief as soon as you and your body get reaquaintted with each other and the new needs. "

" My advice would not be to stop the nexium because it is not all the way controlled with food, eating right and weight loss with greatly reduce the pain but in servere cases I think surgery is nessacery, I am due to have surgery next month and fyi, I did a perfect diet, and took medication that didn’t control this hernia, plus it is huge in size, there is nothing adverse about taking Nexium, There is now time release Nexium that has helped me way better! Also a common mistake is not waiting ONE HOUR after taking NEXIUM to eat, it is very important to do so, good Luck hun, "

" they can either increase on the nexium or that can give you zantac with the nexium or something else...Nexium did work for me at the beginning but didnt afterwards...My hiatal...grew a pocket and the food was being stored in the diaphram..you probably do feel food laying close to the chest...how is the acid reflux and what did the test say about the hiatal...like size..what type of hiatal...where exactly is it and so on...
