I was recently diagnosed with a hiatal hernia and I am learning a lot about what foods to eat and how much to eat at a meal but my sudden change in eating habits has brought up questions with friends and family and led to some awkward moments. For instance eating out is always awkward for me because the portions served at restaurants are too large and I end up eating about a third of it and getting a doggy bag. This gets me awkward looks and I find it difficult to explain why I need to eat less at meals because a lot of times when I explain it people don't even believe me and recommend things that are bogus. For instance one day my stomach was bothering me and it turned into about a half hour long argument with a friend who kept recommending that I drink soda because it help clam her stomach. She simply wouldn't believe me when I told her that drinking an acid wouldn't help acid reflux and she brought it up about three times that day. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if they knew any way of better communicating what I can an cannot due because of my condition.
