Advice:
Is Xanax okay for a "recovering" Heroin addict?

My bf, who has been an addict for years, is trying once again to kick the habbit. He has some leftover Suboxone from his first stint in rehab, which he said he has already started to take. Problem is, he has severe insomnia. I'm not really sure if its related to his heroin usage, but he cannot sleep for the life of him. He's extremely moody and grouchy all the time, and all i ever hear him say is, "if i only had xanax, then i'd sleep." He said the reason why he keeps going back to using H is because he liked the feeling of just being tired and falling asleep.. he'll literally be up til 6am just about every night, before getting tired enough to sleep..

But to me, that just sounds like another addiction, and I can't image a doctor would prescribe a heroin addict with xanax... but then, I'm sure he could find one that would. I just don't know what to do about it anymore. I feel like his habbit is getting worse and worse, and I just don't trust that hes using the suboxone..

Does anyone know any treatment that would be condusive for a recovering addict? I'm just so worried its going to start him with another addiction. If its not one thing, its another with him.

thanks..

" Hi, well if he is honest with the doctor about his addiction, than I doubt highly it would get prescribed. Xanax gives you the same effect as heroin and is extremely physically addicting. As for him not sleeping-sounds like just an excuse and maybe he is not ready to quit. Coming of of dope is terribly uncomfortable in a lot of ways. The saboxon takes care of that. It took me months to be able to sleep. You put your body though so much stress when you use, it like goes into shock when you stop. Your mind and body tell you that it needs the dope. He needs to just get through it, if that is what he really wants and like I said the saboxon he shouldn't be having too many problems. I'm off that. I took it for a month when I initially stopped. Been clean for 8 months. This isn't easy stuff at all. But you have to make the choice. Do you want to live or die? "

" Hi Izzy1027, I'm titrating off sub right now and somthing that has helped me with sleeping is Melatonin. It is the natural chemical that your body produces when you are tired. Because of the withdrawal it is pretty much impossible for you body to absorb or make it. All he needs to do is take it around 30 min before he wants to get some sleep. I have been taking between 6 and 9 mg. He will have to play with it to get the dose right. He really needs to stay far away from that other shit. It is harder to kick than the H and if he starts taking it regularly he will have to kick them both. Keep him far away from methadone too. That shit is evil. If he is ready he is going to have to do more than just take sub to stay clean. Also let him know that if he drinks alcohol that will make him metabolize the sub faster than usual so he is not going to want to do that on a regular basis either. Let me know if there is any thing I can do for you. You sound like a very good friend. Take care of you "

" My husband is also a heroin addict. His Dr from his counseling center perscribed him xanax. I do not agree with this, but he does have anxiety and ticks that are now gone due to the xanax, but he does abuse. Xanax is very addictive and just as hard to kick as heroin. All drugs are bad, but I think Heroin & Xanax (if abused) are the worst. I have a post on here "Subsituting Heroin for Xanax" so I know what you are going thru. Good luck to you. "

" yeahhhhh. the thing about that is--

I'm not sure how much suboxone your boyfriend is taking. I just started the treatment program and my doctor prescribed me 3 (8mg) tablets a day. Sometimes I take a xanax or two when I can't sleep. When I get home from work (I'm a waitress and a bartender so I make cash every night) is the worst time of temptation for me. Cash in hand and a long, slow stretch of nothing to do until i can FINALLY drift off to sleep. I usually just take the xanax to knock myself out so i cant' fuck up and get high. But i only take one. maybe two. Back in the day, before this whole lets-get-clean thing that I'm doing now, I used to take seven, eight...maybe nine GG xanax at a time. Taking too much alprazolam while you have buprenorphine in your system can actually kill you. My doctor warned me against taking any at all, as it is a highly dangerous combination, but as i said, i still do a little. Just make sure he doesn't take to much. benzos + buprenorphine is a drug combination that's comparable to...say...MAOIs and SSRIs. And remember that suboxone has a longer half-life than heroin, so it stays in your system longer. So if you took three pillls today, add in two from yesterday because they're still floating around your bloodstream. Combine that with five or six xanax and it's very likely that you could have a stroke. "

" If the doctor was aware he was a recent addict, sometimes even an addict at all, they most likely will not prescribe you a benzo (xanax, valium, klonopin, etc) because they are all addictive and fun to abuse. What happens when you prescribe something fun to abuse to an ADDICT? They take it as prescribed of course! HAHA... There is always methadone, that has more of a calming effect and maybe he'd like that better than suboxone. Only thing is, you have to make sure he is on at LEAST 80-90MG of methadone for his heroin to be mostly blocked. If he's on like 40mg he can still go get high. Just know the goods and the bads of methadone treatment first, of course. There are many. It works for me though. Wish you luck hun.

" Oh and xanax won't really put him to sleep anyway it'll just calm him down unless he takes like eight blues.150-200mg of Serequel will knock his ass RIGHT out no matter how sick and it isn't really addictive. "

" Hello, Oh yes the tossing and turning, my Doctor who percribes me my Suboxone also gives me a RX for Ambien. Which really works well. I tried to get him to give me something for the Anxiety, however he will NOT perscbribe and kind on Benzo (Xanax) with the Suboxone. addicting. He said it is not safe to combine the two as if using dope is safe. Plus its pretty addicting. But I find what the Ambien does is turns off your head, for me it has a good 4-6 hour window so you don't wake up with any sort of groggyness or stuff like that, keep in mind I am not a doctor so side effect may differ, its non narcotic and works well with the Suboxone. I am sure if he has a RX for Suboxone if he calls his doctor they should probably have no problem perscribing it to him, only down side is they may require an office visit which equals $$$, if you have insurance, cool. Sweet Dreams. xoxoFAITHxoxo "

" Yea, he definitely needs to shoot for a sleeping pill. Like whats her name said, Ambien is popular and like I mentioned last time Seroquel will knock out a horse if he's really having that much trouble falling asleep. It is very expensive at the pharmacy, however. "

" Anytime you stop getting high especially off heroin youwill find you have a few weeks of inability to sleep well.
This is natural and basically you either work through it with some natural methods like maybe Melatonin or a few others that youcantry or teas that relax you for bed.
Or you go to the doctor who is handling your recovery and meet with him or her and your counselor and discuss it and they possibly give you a sleeping pill to help you get through those few weeks like mentioned Ambien.

Jumping to another addictive substance is just well natural for us addicts and our desire and need to self medicate and in many case over medicate.

I too am on Methadone and it works for me i have no problem really sleeping and i have no cravings. That last is part of the good thing about Methadone. at the proper dose it will not only block any effects if you do use But it also puts you in a place where you have no desires no cravings to get high.
This does is different for everyone but it does work for many people. "
