My ex went downhill after high school, he got into drugs and eventually started using heroine. He was extremely smart(honors classes) and an awesome athlete in high school and i do have faith in him that he can kick the addiction. He has been in jail awaiting trial and court dates for possession and burglary since April (so he has been clean for a few months). He is supposed to go to court ordered rehab August 21st for 90 days. I visit him for support and his family loves him to death and supports him a ton. He says he wants to get get clean, however a lot of people with similar experience (with addiction) continue to tell me not to get my hopes up, people relapse, 'once an addict always an addict' I'm just looking for maybe some insight or past experience. Am I getting my hopes up, just to get let down?

" I believe people can live a sober life after addiction. My son has relapsed several times but emotionally I am still there for him. He is also in jail awaiting sentencing due to stealing to support his habit. It is good he is going into a 90 day program and he will have several months clean before that. I know with my son being locked up has given him plenty of time to think. I am sure he takes comfort in knowing he has a friend like you. It is possible he might relapse but it is also possible that this is what will turn his life around. Your story sounds similar to ours. My son had everything going for him, got into the best college was into music and sports but got in with the wrong crowd at college and became an addict. All we can do is pray that they find their higher power and stay strong. I do believe that the 12 step programs are the best for long term recovery. Best of luck to both of you. "
