A connection-NHL and HCV

Have other people heard of the connection between HCV and Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma? Its kind of scary, but extremly interesting too. Anyone on here been diagnosed with both?
Heres an article I found: Hepatitis C May Boost Non-Hodgkins Risk Findings May Support Screening Patients For Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma (WebMD) Hepatitis C may make non-Hodgkin's lymphoma more likely, researchers report in The Journal of the American Medical Association. That may mean that people with hepatitis C should be screened for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, note the researchers, who included Eric Engels, MD, MPH, of the National Cancer Institute. Lymphomas are cancers of the lymph system. Hepatitis C is caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV). Hepatitis C infection can cause liver damage, including cirrhosis, and lead to liver cancer. However, most people with hepatitis C infection have no symptoms, and many have little liver damage. "Although the risk of developing lymphomas is small, our research suggests that screening of HCV-infected individuals could identify conditions which may lead to cancer. It might then be possible to prevent progression to lymphoma," says Engels in a National Cancer Institute news release. Engels' colleagues included Thomas Giordano, M.D., MPH, who works in Houston at the Baylor College of Medicine and the Houston Center for Quality of Care and Utilization Studies at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center. They studied the 1997-2004 medical records of more than 718,000 U.S. military veterans, including more than 146,000 hepatitis C patients. The veterans — most of whom were white men — were 52 years old, on average. The study shows that veterans with hepatitis C were 20 percent to 30 percent more likely to be diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma than those without hepatitis C. Hepatitis C infection was also linked to a nearly threefold increase in a related cancer of white blood cells called Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia. The researchers aren't sure how hepatitis C makes non-Hodgkin's lymphoma more likely, or if the findings apply to other groups of people. Hepatitis C infection is more common among military veterans than among the general public. About 5 percent of veterans have hepatitis C, compared with less than 2 percent of U.S. civilians, according to background information cited in the study. The researchers call for further studies to probe the possible link between hepatitis C infection and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Posted on 11/07/09, 07:11 pm |

Actually the other day I told my mom if I wasn't going to graduate in a month I would become a N.P and specialize with Hep-C. I don't know, I never feel like I'm doing enough about this disease, drives me nuts. lol

cooked numbers. most current vets are vietnam era which goes up to about 1982. hcv is approaching 11 % in this group. are ya seeing why i dont want any annual vaccs?? very few vets can get a service related disability for hcv cause frankly, it would cost a kings ransom to compensate them..this is largely a military related virus. interferon n riba are used to treat leukemia. we did not get hcv from smokin hash and licking toads. mmm, toads. :)>

Capn, this article is from 3 yrs ago, I'm sure your right that the stats have gone up. Its sad when the U.S. healthcare system can't take care of those who put their life on the line for us, like yourself.

well andrea, your boyfriend may be coming home. had we went after radicals in afgh, then pakistan instead of wrecking iraq the middle east might be cooled down by now. right now obama is interested in an exit from the region. i think israel was behind the 9-11 attacks to draw us into their cause. your guy is a soldier, i only attended a 3 year long party in germany during the cold war. ivan was too drunk to cross the fulda gap n we were too stoned to give a shit if he did. :)>

I also thought some weird study drew a correlation between National Hockey Leaque & HCV, all that slashing, perhaps? Maybe I can get a grant for a study. Give me a good excuse to hang around some athletic young men.
