HCV and HIV: sexual transmission

An article from HIVPlus Magazine about sexual transmission as a vector in HIV+ people:

http://hivplusmag.com/NewsStory.as...

The quick sum-up: if you're HIV+ and sexually active, it behooves you to include HCV testing as part of your regular health screening. If you're HIV+ and also have HCV genotype 1, delaying treatment may not be an option. The good news is that achieving an SVR with early treatment has a much higher chance of success than other clinical studies indicate.

Anecdotally, I learned about having Hep C as a footnote to starting treatment for HIV: my liver had a cranky response to the drugs, so my doctor did a comprehensive screen and found HCV. I'm pretty sure I caught it really early, as my HCV viral load was only 19.2k when I started treatment. (Also, I'm undetectable as of week 12 of 48!) So I'm holding out hope for an SVR at the end of this.

" Guess...I'm all freaked out here...If I have HEP C does that automatically mean I have HIV? No one has ever mentioned HIV to me, does that mean they tested and I don't have it or do I need to request to be tested? "

" Brok2wings: no, it's not automatic, they're different viruses. I do recommend, though, that you educate yourself as to how HIV is transmitted and if you're at risk, go get tested! "
