They believe C crosses the brain blood barrier (BBB).
http://medicalxpress.com/news/2012-... That very well may be true. Folks with C frequently are fatigued and unable to concentrate. Brain fog even before tx. My question is if the C is able to cross the BBB & produce confusion & brain fog, that means either the interferon, ribavirin or protease inhibitors cross it as well. Almost EVERYONE on tx gets brain fog. HCV crossing the BBB is a concern. I guess if the drugs did not cross the BBB, we could not eradicate any viruses in our brains. Creepy thought. Oh, no, I have a viral brain - it needs to be eradicated. Please research this more for us, Dr. Ernie. Ya know, I obviously don't understand what you are saying. lol

I am soooo not a doctor. I don't have nearly that much information in my head but you absorb and learn a lot working in a big hospital with lots of sick people and brilliant physicians and an interdisciplinary staff over many years.
As for my brain comments, I'd recommend watching the Walking Dead on AMC, Zombieland, 28 Days Later, Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead (both versions), Day of the Dead and Shaun of the Dead just off the top of my head. Okay back to Hepcat's thread. I didn't mean to hijack this one but my guess is that he doesn't mind. :-)~

Yes, this is not new..infact I think I posted about this the other day....I gather from what they state that the SOC old stuff did not eliminate the virons and that is why they are working on new stuff. Your article states that the virons can replicate in the brain...but perhaps my take is they don''t leave because of the BBB.

I've had this virus for more than 40 yrs. Now I have a reason why I've
been getting dumber and dumber.

@ gooser1
The virus (as far as we know) only replicates in the liver. But they get into your bloodstream too, which feeds all your organs nutrients. They just congregate at the liver to replicate. I've heard they target LDL to infiltrate & gain entry into the liver. Somehow their structural enzyme attached to the LDL to get in. The Blood Brain Barrier (BBB) keeps unwanted critters out of the brain but it seems the researchers believe HCV can pass through the BBB. The new protease inhibitor tx inhibits replication. The old SOC tx only boosted the body's immune system. If the virus is eradicated, it won't be in your system or your blood. The tx drugs (PI) target replication. Interferon & Riba boost the immune system. Today, they use them in conjunction. Many folks (myself included) don't like the interferon. It is confusing to me too but I can only hope the destruction of the virus (total SVR) means there's no virus anywhere in your body, only HCV antibodies... I know the C has affected my brain but luckily I'm not on the Zombie level -- yet! (At least I think so.) Hope this helps you.

We all have an excuse for being a little crazy.
HCV may be in our brains! I don't mind, as long as I'm not certified crazy. ...

Yep...this is what I thought last Oct when my brain exploded about 5 months post 48 2x tx. F'in buggers hung out in a pocket in my brain and I had a brain aneurysm. NOT 1 doc put 2 n 2 together, but in my heart of hearts.... I knew it was related................... Feel like a guinea pig........... I am grateful tho, as it was leaking when I fell....and should have had minimally a stroke or be dead. Instead, I had a grand mal seizure, fell, cracked my head on my sink and didn't come to for 5 hours...yet somehow I called 911 on myself! DO not remember what the H I said, but it's logged on my cell phone that I made the call. It's even a STUPID thought to think that HCV cells do not cross into ur brain...DOH.... a brain function is good blood flow..............F'in ass wipes~ Thanx to whoever gave me the strength to crawl 2 rooms away thru blood to make that CALL..... (I always say, my dad pushed me and saved my life...RIP and love u Daddy)!
