Blood in the needle

When I took my tx class I was told to pull back on the syringe and make sure there is no blood. She said to throw the shot away and start over if there was. My first shot was given by a nurse friend of mine and she said she never bothers to do this. I find that the motion is awkward, and painful if the needle moves. I never bother to do it anymore. Anyone else skip this step? One time there was blood in the syrynge and more than normal bleeding afterwards.

" Jester, I didn't do the pull back either. As you said, it's much too awkward. My training nurse told me I didn't have to do it if I didn't want to...so I didn't...and all 48 of my shots went just fine without doing that.

The less stress the better. "

" I did not do the blood check because The insurance refused to replace a shot if

i had to throw it away, Iwould have just missed that dose.
I had four places on my body where I would give myself my injection and I would try to go in a rotation.
Be careful ! "

" Just in case anyone doesn't know. The whole reason for that step is to make sure the medication is not entering directly into the bloodstreem. (I/V) It would be very unlikely to randomly hit an artery, although certainly not impossible. "

" Yes, David is right.

I did the pull back in the beginning, but the needle is so stiff that I gave up. Just make sure you have it in a fatty part. "
