having a total hysterectomy

Here is what I just posted in the Fibromyalgia group I belong to, I am hoping you guys, oops gals only I guess, can also support/advise me.

Just decided to go ahead with a hysterectomy. I am hoping it will take away some of the pain issues I suffer from. Has anyone else had one?
I am scared but hope I am doing the right thing. I am 48 and have very hard periods, fibroids, moodswings, lower back pain, burst ovarian cysts etc. all on top of the constant insomnia and muscle and joint pain. I would love some good advice/support.

" hi, i don't know anything about having a total hysterectomy. if it were me i'd get a 2nd opinion for sure. won't you have to take hormones after the surgery?

wishing you all the best! "

" I had one at 32 due to severe endometriosis. The doctor put me on HRT immediately, and I was on it for 16 years. When I finally got off it, I went through menopause symptoms, which were awful. If you can keep your ovaries, that would be a huge plus. Hormones protect the liver, and when I got off HRT was when I developed cirrhosis. And like others have said, get other opinions. I know they are doing all kinds of treatments now that were not available back in the day. "

" My Mom had one when I was quite young, In fact most of the women in my family have had them. she must have been in her 30's, She is not on any hormone's and is doing very well without them, i don't ever remember any of my family member having any issues afterwards and I have some real drama mama's in my family! Mom is now in her mid 50's and just fine. I know she said not getting a cycle is pretty awesome! "

" At age 38, due almost your exact same symptoms, I had a total hysterectomy and FOR ME, it was a complete nightmare.

I was never able to return to work, even though I used to be the supervisor of 40 people, I could not even work 10 hours doing side work.
My body would not accept the hormones. I tried every hormone available. I was ready for the looney bin, NO KIDDING!!!!

I wish now I would have tried the shot in the ovary that brings on menopause, which is what happens when you have everything removed and you then take the estrogen in pills, shots, patches, whatever. THIS WILL GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF WHAT YOU WILL FEEL LIKE AFTER THE SURGERY....
I thought surgery was going to be the answer to all my problems, however, it created so many problems, I feel I must tell women that it is not always the answer for everyone. I HAVE NO SEX DRIVE AT ALL NOW, AND BEFORE IT WAS GREAT....
I wanted my problems to go away, I had no idea I was bringing on
more problems than I could handle. Almost destroyed me completely.
2nd opinion, even 3rd recommend. I didn't get one and I am so sorry as once they are gone, you can't get them back.
Hate to be so blunt, but I never knew my own estrogen was my own calming, soothing hormone.
Everyone will say something different, I have to say what happened to me. 10 years later, I have calmed down. LONG 10 YRS!!!
May God help you with this very hard decision. "

" I definately agree with getting a second opinion especially when you are talking hysterectomy. I would also talk to my hepatologist and make sure that if you go through with this both doctors are on the same page and discussing your options.

Good Luck with whatever decision you make.. I'll remember you in prayer. "
