Hello everyone, It's certainly a pleasure Finding this site. Here is my story: Almost a year ago I applied for a secong life insurance policy and was denied because I was Hep C came back reactive(positive).I believe that was one of the craziest moment in my life. I would not accept it and refuse to go seek medical help. I guess I was scared of the reality of what could be. However about 6 wks ago I decided to go see a Gastro doctor,He did blood work and He confirmed that I had the Hep c and I was a type 1. He then decided to do a liver biopsy, which I went ahead and did last week, the results came back and I went in to see My Gastro today(it was the longest wait ever). Here is a copy of there findings.

SURGICAL PATHOLOGY REPORT
Accession #: S07-10739
Final Pathologic Diagnosis
LIVER, BIOPSY:
- CHRONIC HEPATITIS C WITH MILD PERIPORTAL INFLAMMATION (GRADE 2)
AND NO
FBROSIS (STAGE 0) (SEE COMMENT).
Diagnosis Comment
The overall hepatic architecture is intact without fibrosis,
confirmed with trichrome stain. Portal triads are expanded by a
mainly lymphocytic inflammatory cell infiltrate with focal
periportal inflammation and single cell necrosis. Bile ducts are
intact without inflammation or degenerative change. There is
mild steatosis. There is no stainable iron, confirmed with
Prussian blue stain. The findings are consistent with chronic
hepatitis C with mild periportal inflammation and no fibrosis.

Specimen(s) Received
Random liver, needle biopsy

My Gastro doctor said that all this was great news and that he not would refer treatment at this time. He wants me to follow up with Him within a year.He felt like the hep c was not doing any real damage to my liver and that type 1 hep c is very hard to treat,he also stated that the med only work for about 1/3 of Those that uses it,and the side effects are horrible. He said in a few Years they should find other treatments for hep c . What are You guys Opinion on all this?

" I am glad that you finally saw a specialist and had your biopsy. It's important to have that info before making any decision whether to do tx or not.
I don't know about that 1/3 number being successful; I think it's closer to 50% and up. Also, I really don't think that the sides are horrible for everyone; I did my yr of tx and the sides I had were tolerable - I was able to work all through my tx.
As for a kinder, gentler tx coming soon, well, I have been hearing that for a few yrs now and I am not holding my breath.
If you have decided not to do tx, you can focus on cleaning up your eating and life habits, eliminating all that is harmful to your liver or causing stress to it. Take milk thistle and see if you can bring some of that inflammation down. If you smoke quit; if you drink, quit. Stuff like those life changes will do you nothing but good.
I would say to see your specialist twice a year to see how you are doing. "

" well your biopsy doesnt sound too terrible and that IS a good thing.. Yes, you can eat very healthily, no sugar, lots of fresh fruits and veggies (organic of course), lean low fat proteins, whole grains, you know the healthy stuff, just stay away from white sugar, white four etc,, no alcohol, stop smoking if you do, drink filtered water, take as few medications that you can remembering that everything you eat or drink has to be filtered through your liver.. Milk Thistle, schizzandra, green tea, red clover are all pretty good for the liver, but be careful as there are many supplements and herbs out there that are VERY dangerous for long term use with liver disease.
Good luck hon,,

" eat or take anything with Iron in it, don't even cook in an Iron skilet. If you are not overweight eat what you want food has no effect of cure or kill. Milk Thistle should be your next best friend, go to GNC or herb shoppe. Your Doc sounds good, biospy sounds good at this time, I would want to know my liver funtions AST, ALT. No drinking or smoking just like you were already adviced. Eat small portion meals this will keep you from feeling so full. It takes 24hours to digest one regular meal. Drink water, green tea can cause a rise in Blood Presure. Good Luck and I'm glad you are in good shape at this time. "

" All the advice given on this thread is bang on the nail. Our own experiences differ as HCV doesn't affect ppeople in quite the same ways - in terms of symptoms. Vitamin B complex supplements and organic foods are a great way of keeping the dragon at bay. Personally I've also cut out meat & dairy, but I'm probably going too far.
Unfortunately there's no way to tell how effective Tx will be, or what side effects you may experience. "
