I just got diagnosed and realize I need to get a support system together. How do you tell family who still have a tendency to condem a lifestyle I left over 25 years ago. Should I bother? What approach to use if I do??? We are in touch on a weekly bases.

" It was tough at first, I was surprised that some people knew what it was and other didn't. I didn't care if their opinion was negative. Stick with me, I will teach you weather you want to hear or not! "

" I was afraid to tell my husband! My mom was the first person I told. Then I only told close family members, and while I went through tx, it was easier to tell more. Now, I'm not afraid to tell anyone.
Kathie, if you present them with the facts when you tell them, they may take to your news better. Like, how it can be spread, and what safety precautions you have to take. "

" It actually took me a like 3-4 years before I told my kids or my ex-husband (now my husband again). They were great about it, more upset that I had held back so long. My sister right away jumped on me about my past drinking. First thing out of her mouth was "I kept telling you to stop drinking". After I explained what HCV is she calmed down and was more concerned as to tx and how I was going to take care of this.

My folks are old and sick on their own so we all figured they don't need to know. Why worry them and besides they would probably drive me nuts anyway.

Just like Capn, my kids also look down on me and my hubby cause we're potheads but tough shit. They understand it's a generational thing and choose not to smoke themselves. I'm proud of them and glad they've made that choice for themselves but don't come and preach to me. "

" maybe you shouldn't tell them until you are strong and secure about all this. especially if you think they are going to condemn you again or more or ????. AND, it's certainly none of their business anyway? you don't ever NEED to tell them. from your post it sounds like maybe you don't even like them all that much anyway. so don't tell them! "

" I told my immediate family- mom, dad, sis, bro and some friends only a couple and my boyfriend.

I think it depends on who you tell about your disease, I stil get nervous when I tell friends and I didn't do anything to get this disease, blood transfusion. So I think it varies. "

" You don't have to tell everyone in your family if you don't want to its your choice your body your life don't feel obligated..As for my family a mass majority of them have it anyway and as for friends i tell some of them and some i dont some leave some dont...
Everything will be okay. "
