Advice:
Children with HCV

Hello, I have been dealing with Hep C since I was in grade school, and recently found out that not only has mine has advanced to Cirrhosis, but my 3 year old son was diagnosed with HCV as well.

Does anyone know of any sites or studies done on children born with it?
Thank you in advance for any advise.

(PS for any woman going to have children and have HCV, they say it is very small % of babies that contract it in utero...I had an extremely difficult labor with DIC.... but it is extra important to stay as healthy as possible before and during your pregnancy, and have children screened AFTER 1 year)

" I think its a mixed blessing for a child to have hcv. The good part is their immune systems are stronger to fight this disease and knowing early is great because the disease can't progress as quickly. But its sad because their kids and this is hard on everyone. Its not fair. "

" It's hard enough to handle my own treatment. I have so much respect for all you moms/dads out there helping your kids and dealing with your own health.
My doctors have told me that tx is often more successful in younger people. I've heard that kids have fewer side effects too.
I've had HCV since shortly after birth and was diagnosed at age 17. It's been a long, scary road to treatment but I'm glad I knew as easy as I did. The antibody test is pretty cheap. I encourage anyone with worries to get themselves or their family members tested. "

" Riversmom,
I adopted two children both from a hepc positive mother. One was born with the virus. She is now a vibrant 4 year old and doing very well. We are waiting to treat till she is oolder but the new drugs are much better and should be available in a couple of years. Most kids that get it at birth show very few symptoms during child hood. I am always scared for her but love her and wouldn't have any other child. I know you are terrified and heart broken but know we are here for you. Does your son have a good Pediatric Hepatologist. We go to Texas Childrens and they have one of the best. He is always so positive. He says children do VERY WELL>>>> I will keep you in my prayers..... My babies name is BreAnna and you are welcome to become our friend and view her pic.... PS. Don't let him be treated differently even if you have to keep his dx to yourself... My doc says only tell those who I know will understand. "
