Advice:
how to get placed on a liver transplant list

My boyfriend was admitted to Mass. General Hospital last week on an emergency basis. His lungs were filling up with flluid (2 1/2 quarts) and needed to be drained every 2 - 3 days. The fluid build up is a direct result of his liver not draining. His stomach has been full of fluid off and on and it's now gone into his lungs. While at Mass General, he was able to have all the labs done required to place him on the list for a liver transplant. His MELD score is only 18 so he's got a little ways to go before he's ready to (hopefully) have the transplant surgery. While we're both very impressed with MGH, we discovered that New England has a longer wait for liver donations than anywhere else in the country. Because he has a cousin in Florida, I want to see if we can get him on a transplant list at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville. Does anyone know the best way to go about doing this? Where do I start? Do I call Mayo Clinic and find out or do I start with his liver doctor? Also, I was looking online yesterday for hospitals having high success statistics for liver transplantation but didn't have much luck. Can any of you make recommendations on top of the line hospitals? I'm sorry if these are dumb questions but this is all completely new to me and he's too sick to take the lead on this right now. Thanks so much and I look forward to hearing from you.

" Hi Wingnut,
We are frequenters at Mayo in Fla. and all they require is a referal and will most likely ask to see some of his medical records. They have a team of doctors who reviews over the information and then scheduling will let you know about an appt. You are very smart to be thinking about other options for him. He is really sick and without a doubt I'm sure he needs all the help he can get and you helping him is awesome. That's why we are here on this earth .... to love our fellow man.

If you have any other questions or want phone numbers etc just pop me a message.

BW "

" My friend's brother is a MD chief of a hosp in Boston. She could not get a transplant in Boston. Her hubby moved her to Tampa Bay, she had her liver in 6mos at Tampa General. They moved here. you would have to move, the pre & post visit schedule is very intensive, and when that call comes in you have to go to the hospital immediately. "
