Hello, I hope that it is okay if I join your group. I really have no support system right now and am reaching out. I adopted two children from an IV drug user. She loved them dearly but was very sick with her Hepatitis C. I knew there was a risk of them having Hep C but I was willing to take it. The oldest tests positive for the antibody but is now almost 8 and still no detectable RNA. The youngest (age 4) has a viral load and is genotype 1b. Most days I am pretty okay with everything but I have my days where my heart is so heavy for her. Why her? What did she ever do? I also have fears because I have 5 other children and I want to keep them safe too. My Hepatologists swears that as long as we don't share personal items, and I use precautions with her blood, there is really no risk to them. I don't treat her any different than the rest. We use gloves with all 7 just so she doesn't feel wierd. We tell her that everybodies blood has nasty germs and we should NEVER touch it. I just want to make sure I am doing everything I can for her. Thanks for listening.

Why do you where gloves? You mean if she gets cut or bleeds? I hope otherwise you don't because that would make her feel like an outsider. Her doc is right as long as you guys don't share toothbrushes, razors or anything else that would be blood to blood contamination everyone else should be fine.
Make sure you still treat her like a kid and not a hepc patient. Its a great thing you did adopting the two kids. Did her doctor ever say anything about treatment for her once she gets older?

Welcome to the family, where support and love are all free. Before TX I had hep for all my married life (Thirty two years in Oct.) and we made love atleast once HAHA. The point is my wife doesn't have it or even the antibody so its harder then what you are talking about. Its a blood to blood virus. So be smart and educate them as soon as they are all old enough and every thing should be good. God bless and good luck

Reply#1 Sorry I don't know your name. But yes we only where gloves if she bleeds. We do the same for all of the kids. We just teach them that blood is yucky PERIOD>>> That way if we are not there we know they don't put themselves at any risk. We have talked of treatment but her genotype does not have a good outcome usually.... I really hope that we can treat while she is younger (they seem to do better than adults). She has fairly normal liver enzymes but her liver is enlarged a bit. We will probably do a biopsy sometime this year. I am so scared for that biopsy.

Barb,
Have you had a biopsy? Any of you? Is it painful? They will have to keep her for a couple of days to make sure she doesn't bleed. I just worry about her soooo much sometimes... I feel so blessed to have them both.. They are two of the neatest kids you will ever meet.

Just remember, HCV is a Blood to Blood. The glove issue is a good precaution for having 7 children in your home, Keep in mind HCV is "BLOOD TO BLOOD" My blood to your blood, Childrens blood to other childrens blood, Take all the universal precautions about HCV contact. I agree with your HEPATOLOGIST TOO!! It'll always work out for ya.
