I am a very responsible carrier of this burden for 8 years now, but just sought consult to a gastro-enterologist 5 years ago. I never had any symptoms at all.
My doctor said that viral infection is always self-limiting; that the magnificent human body is designed to develop antibodies to combat different viruses. We just have to stay healthy all the time so that our immune system can do its job well. Sounds pretty easy to manage hepaB... but what takes my system too long to develop natural antibody against this virus when it can fight other viral infections (i.e chicken pox, mumps) in 1-2 weeks time? Good question, I am not totally sure but think it is a lot like AIDS just in the way that if your body can't totally get rid of it and make it become non-active it sticks with us our whole lives............right???
BTW the American Kiver foundation has these answers and they have been wonderful to talk to, I just can't remember all the answers..................

Hi Grantm!
I actually stopped hoping that my body can totally defeat the virus so I wont get frustrated over and over. Maybe you're right that it's like HIV, once there is an opportunity or when our defenses are down the virus will get very active and can eventually cause symptoms or abnormal liver function test result. How can I find something good out of this unfortunate condition of ours when its like a live bomb inside me that can explode any time? Just the thought of it cripples my mind in a while.

Yes but as I pointed out ,I unknowingly have had chronic hep-b for like thirty years, in the last few months I had just become aware that me "acute" dx. of thirty years ago was wrong and I have not really had any symptoms or liver issues in all this time.
I imagine the copd will get me before the liver but I imagine when we get old and have lowered immune systems we might have liver issues too, but I am thinking late sixties/early seventies if we take good care of ourselves..........

Another thing that bothers me is when I start to have family of my own. My husband and children might get sick because of its mode of transmission, you know what I mean right?
How is your family?

I have heard about the vaccine they give to newborns, but I just cant help but think of the great risk of transmission during delivery where the baby being born gets in contact with the blood of an infective mother. Infant's vulnerability is high because mucous membranes in the eyes, nose and mouth are exposed during the labor process as he passes through the birth canal... I learned this from a resource speaker ion HIV-AIDS symposium which I attended last year.
