i was diagnosed about a year and a half ago with hep b. i was an iv drug user and had plenty of unprotected sex. anyhow, now almost 3 years in recovery i am in the first relationship i have been in in 10 years. i told him about my status from the very beginning, have avoided unprotected sex, i have taken every precaution i can think of. yesterday we found out he also has hep b. i feel that i may have given it to him, while he seems to think he had to have contracted it before we met. i feel horrible. could he have gotten it by us making out or sharing food and drink? we haven't had protected oral sex, but we never ejaculated "in" one another. i have 2 children and now i am afraid i could pass it to them by kissing them, sharing food or drink with them... does anyone have any knowledge in this area?

" Hi!

Hep B can be transmitted via all body fluids in principle. Most common is blood. The amount of virus in the blood reveals who infectious one is. It is possible to infect people living in the same household. Therefore I would recommend to get everyone vaccinated who comes in close contact with you (like sex partners, children or other people in the same househole). The probability of infecting people via urine, saliva... is not high, but it exists and increases when you have a high viral load. "

" The 'Hep B core antibody, IGM' will tell you if the infection has occurred within the last six months. (i.e. acute infection)

If your children were born after 1991, in the USA, then it is likely that your children are already vaccinated. It wouldn't hurt to have them tested anyway so that you will know if the vaccines did, in fact, produce antibodies.

Take care!
