I had this surgery 8 days ago.
I told my surgeon at my exam and at the surgery date that i had not gone poo in a week. she did the surgery anyway.
3 days later after the surgery i had to go. i could not. and all the laxitives and softeners in the world were not helping. after hours of trying i called my surgeon from the bathroom floor for help. she just told me to take more softeners and exlax and such, and that she already told me it would hurt and she didnt know what i expected. these made it worse. i was literally in convulsions, my body was trying to push this out, i could not control it. just felt myself ripping out of my stitches, and extreme pain. it was worse than child birth and labor pain, and there was nothing i could do. i ended up being taken by ambulance to th er because i could not stand any longer.
turns out i had an impaction. there was no way it was coming out on its own. the er doc had to go in after it. plus many many enemas. and finally it came out. but i think the damage was already done.
the surgeon said it was ok to rip my stitches, but everything i read says not to push, and i pushed so hard ( per her instructions as well) that i even ripped a little from where i was sewn up from having a baby 2 months ago. i couldnt help it, my body did it on its own. i have an appt with this surgeon tomarrow. im worried she will just write me off again.
im scared. i have yellowish drainage from the site. stich wires sticking out everywhere. it feels like freakin ground beef down there... She was annoyed when i called, and every time i have spoken with her since.
my medical ends next week, so this is it,
has anyone had this experience? is drainage normal? how long should i expect to recover? the surgeon said 2 weeks, but im seeing it takes longer than that from reading. will it look like ground beef???
ugh. this is depressing and embarrasing and gross.

" I think your surgeon made a poor decision having you undergo the surgery when you had not had a bowel movement for 8 days. I took several enemas before my surgery as I think is standard practice. It sounds like your surgeon is not caring for your needs or making wise decisions on your behalf. Get a new doctor.

Also, take care of yourself and make sure you have loved ones nearby. The mental stress and acute pain.trauma from my hemorrhoidectomy led to me having my first and only psychotic break.. also known as nervous breakdown. It lasted a month. It has been several years and I have recovered very well, but it was a harrowing experience I do not wish to repeat.

My doctor seemed pretty happy with his results, but I was not. My external thrombosed hemorrhoid (like a regular grape) was a nuisance, but so is my scar. It shouldn't matter as I have butt-cheeks that protect my anus well, but that scar seems to have some piece of my rectum fashioned to become a part of my anus. It is that piece that gives me trouble, becomes swollen, sensitive and painful at times and resulted in a diagnosis of IBS, constipation predominant. Years after the surgery it is still a concern on a monthly basis.

A few days after my surgery I had my first bowel movement and it was probably the most painful experience of my life. I passed a few malt-ball sized pieces of stool. It took about 6 months to fully heal and the only thing that helped was a device that I put on my toiled and fill with lukewarm water that has a bag like an IV that I also fill with lukewarm water. It took about 15 minutes for the bag to empty and would flush my healing wound with fresh water the whole time. Six years later I have a shower head that I can take down and wash my butt with which helps.

Your situation is dire. I am just a regular 30 year old guy who has plenty of other stuff to do on the internets, but I saw your post and took the time to sign up and write this so that you will get help with your problem. I know my life changed because of that hemorrhoid, the subsequent hemorrhoidectomy and my life since then. You will eventually get back to normal if you get the help you need.

I managed to keep my wound healthy and clean and it looked like a pink/red sensitive slab of damaged skin while it healed. I did not experience much drainage, nor did my stitches break. I was back to work within a couple of weeks, but still taking a sitz bath 3 times a day.

Ass troubles are very embarassing and there's nothing you can do except remember that it's your digestive system, everybody has one, everybody has had trouble with it and it's a universally unpleasant thing. As long as you keep yourself clean and do your best not to smell like crap. Sometimes it's unavoidable but do your best and be mindful of other people's perceptions. If you are obnoxious and smell like crap people won't like you or want to be near you (including doctors). If you are humble yet persistent and are doing everything you can to help yourself you stand a better chance of earning the sympathy of others.

Best of luck on your journey and just remember that life has its ups and downs and the only way to live is to find value in what you have. "

" I guess I am lucky my hemms never escalated to this degree. I think Tacomc gave awesome advice. I hope that you soon heal and that the pain does not persist much longer.
You poor thing! :( "

" These are reasons why I will not get a hemorrhoidectomy. My grandmother had had one, and I saw what she went through afterward. I am managing my hemorrhoids, and will continue to do so. "

" My husband had a triple heart bypass a few yrs before having his hemmorhoidectomy and he said he'd have another bypass before he'd go thru that again. He had to drink some godawful stuff a few times before the surgery, and it's job was to clean him out and dehydrate him, which it did very well. When he woke up from the surgery he was in a bad way, very dehydrated. After some food and a drink he started to perk up and we went home. He had a sitz bath for at least a week, he was in a lot of discomfort.

The doc said the roids may come back, they may not, but the surgery would only be done once, no repeats. Well, they did come back, and he has suffered greatly. With a lot of reading and asking questions he has now stopped drinking his one cup of coffee per day, and gone to green and black teas. He rarely has cheese anymore and he has been taking MSM to reduce inflammation. After about 3-4 wks of this he says he feels better and he thinks it's working. "
