Hemochromatosis Support Group
Hemochromatosis is a hereditary disease characterized by improper processing by the body of dietary iron which causes iron to accumulate in a number of body tissues, eventually causing organ dysfunction. It is the main iron overload disorder. Hemochromatosis is notorious for having symptoms that are often initially misattributed to other diseases.
I phlebed yesterday, 600 ml. Hematocrit is higher than two weeks ago which is a good thing, means iron is being removed from organs. Labs will tell next month how much Ferritin has dropped.
I think that during de-iron faze you should limit intake of anything that causes iron absorption. Once you reach maintenance and the high levels of iron are removed, you can pretty much eat what you want, but still watching red meat intake.
As for the HH cookbook, I'm a little confused with some of their recommendations as some of them contradict prior research. As many have said "balance" and moderation are certainly the keys to keeping our chemistry stable. I mean.....I'm not about to go eat an entire cow or anything, but I am finding the reduction in red meat consumption, trying at times. As a hunter, I guess a few 4 footed friends will be spared! :-)
Have a great Easter everyone:-)
As they used to say in the old London Music Halls 'A bit of what you fancy does you good!'
Have a great holiday all.
I try and follow some guidelines put out by the Canadian HH Society:

On this page there are also links to dietary suggestions.
Last night, I had my first red meat (hamburger) in months. The boss took us all out. Not even ten minutes after eating, I had such a cramping pain around the liver. It was pretty intense and lasted about 30 minutes.
Any thoughts?
I eat red meat maybe 2x a month max, if that. I've cut cereals down to only those with less than 8% iron, and I don't eat that often. I look to see how much iron and vitamin C are in the foods I eat.
It seems if I eat foods that are high in iron, I feel worse. I feel better if I avoid those.
It could be because my saturation has been around 90%..I'm in the process of treatment and don't want my numbers to go up.
