I just can't breathe!

I had my heart attack on March 2 of this year. I was doing okay until about 2 months ago after my second stent. Since then I am always short of breath. I have been tested for sleep apnea (which I have) and lung disfunction (which I have but don't know to what extent until I see the specialist). I am becoming very depressed as I feel broken and I feel like my life can never go back to normal. I have always been the strong one and the one who holds the family together. I am scared and angry and sad. Does anyone else have similar circumstances or feelings?

" I just read your story. I have the exact same feelings. Scared, angry sad. From reading other stories on this web site, I know our feelings are normal. I also know that those feelings are the hardest to get over and I know we have to learn how because they are not helping anything. I think we have a lot in common, not wanting our families to see how scared we are. Maybe that is a mistake. They are the ones who love us and they are the ones who will help us heal. Still, I don't want to burden them...I wish I had the answer. "

" Hi littlemouse
These feeling are normal. Know that thing do get better. You don't always have to be the strong one. Your family is there for you to support you. Give them the chance and you might just be surprised on how strong they really are. Ask your cardiologist about cardiac rehab. This is exercises that you do under the supervision of the cardiac rehab team. They put a monitor on you and start you on an exercise routine based on your condition. They help build up your stamina and the exercising will help you feel better. Also know that your still the strong one, how many people do you know that has had a heart attack and walked away. I have had three heart attacks, one in 2003 and the other two in the same week in 2008. I have had open heart bypass surgery twice in the last year, the first one the grafts collapsed and had to be replaced and just three weeks ago they put in a defibrillator, and I'm still kicking around. Know that you come to the best site on the web because everybody is here to help you get through this bump in the road. "

" Hey Girl,
I know what you mean. I have always been the strong one in my family: I took care of my mother for 16 years after my daddy died, all while raising my son and working full time. I was always the one who fixed the problems or found some kind of solution. When I had my MI I came to the realization that this was something I couldn't fix and it really crushed me for a while. Finally I realized that I had to leave it up to God; after all, He has always been in control - I just thought I was in control before.

Rich is right about cardiac rehab. If it's available and your MD says you can do it, it's great! I give it lots of credit for helping me get better sooner. It also gave me confidence that I could do things on my own again.

Email me or post whenever you need to. I will be happy to listen.
My prayers go out to you, and you'll be in them tonight!

" Hi JohnnyF,
I'm also taking Xanax and using Ambien to help me sleep. I had my HA on 5/24/09. Over time I've not had to use the Ambien as much to help me sleep, and I believe that will be the case with you. It's just that there is so much anxiety after the HA that it's hard to let yourself unwind to fall asleep. My MD plans to 'wean me off' the Xanax, probably after the holidays. Speaking for myself, if I hadn't had these two drugs I don't know that I would have done as well as I have. I pray for my friends at DS every day and will add you to my list.

" Thank you all for your prayers and support. Johnny, I am praying for you too. I am also going to counseling now and it is helping a lot. I have a CPAP for my sleep apnea now. I keep taking it off in during the night in my sleep. Is this normal? I love this site! "
