My husband is a 46 year old diabetic. He smokes, though we're both under 10 a day now and drinks fairly heavily - Several drinks every night.
Last week he had blood tests. He went to the diabetic nurse on Monday morning to get the results. They said that his potassium was high and did an ECG. The ECG was abnormal. The doctor then saw him and said that the ECG showed that he had had or was having a heart attack. He checked him over said that he clearly was having a heart attack right then. He sent him for more blood tests and told him he could go home after. He went back on Tuesday. The heart enzymes were all normal, but the potassium was 5.2 though it had dropped considerably. The docotor wants to see him next week to repeat the tests and possibly send him to a cardiologist. My question is: Did he have a heart attack? Posted on 03/03/09, 08:03 pm |

I doubt very seriously that he would have sent him home if he did. The enzymes are the only way to tell through blood work. It would be very wize for him to see a cardiologist. With the nuclear stress test that are avaliable today, most heart attacks can be avoided. I at 34 and being to stubbern to go get checked waited to late and had a heart attack. As for the potassium, to my knowledge it is not and indicator to judge weather or not a heart attack has or is happening. Most everytime mine is checked it is low. So as long as the doctor told you his enzymes were normal he did not have a heart attack. Your enzymes elevate as mine did when you have a heart attack. hope this was helpfull.

I think that he would not have been sent home if he had had one, becuase that just doesn't make any sense. My electrolites? were high and I was careflighted immediately to reno, 3 times. So please have him discuss this with his cardioligist because this is serious stuff.
