I had a non ST-elevated MI 8 mos ago, blocked artery, stent placed. My BP was/is 110/60, HR 55, I weight 145lbs, healthnut, runner.
Why am I on Plavix, Metoprolol, 80mg of Lipitor, and aspirin? I know open heart surgery bypass patients who only take aspirin and 10mg of Lipitor. chuckstent Posted on 08/08/08, 10:08 am |

well you just listed the same meds i take ill tell you basicly what i was told ...... we want your b/p way down and do to the stent we have to keep you blood thin to keep it from clotting off and blocking off the stent
bunch of new meds is a small price to pay for not having to go in and do the bypass and given the chouce i would much rather take the pills wouldnt you :)

Hey Chuck
I too had a heart attack in 2003. Had three blockages and they put in a stent. The doctor also put me on plavix, toprol, lisinopril, and vytorin. After a few years the doctor took me off plavix. Since the end of June of this year I have had two more heart attacks, Three angioplasties, two more stents and a triple bypass. I spent almost a month in the hospital. I say taking a few pills a day is a small price to pay

I am on beta blocker, a water pill and aspirin and so far they do not even know what is wrong with me, except that my left ventricle is pumping much more slowly than it should. They admit that this is not causing any other symptoms. I will have an angiogram September 5th to see if they can figure out what caused this.
I am in Canada. Everything happens slowly here. But I suspect the drugs are because they have no real idea what to do.

As a recipient of a new Aortic valve and double bypass, I can tell you why you're on Plavix and aspirin. The two of them work together to prevent your blood from clotting (it is sticky, you know)and making it flow smoothly through the arteries. The Plavix is not as strong a blood thinner as Coumadin, so you won't be prone to as many bruise marks on your skin as you would have with Coumadin. As you know, the Lipitor is for your cholesterol (too bad it's so expensive now). I wish you well, Chuck.

Hi Chuck~
My doc took me off of Plavix within three months after my MI and stent. I am on a statin and a beta blocker as well..and I am down from 325mg to81 mg of aspirin. Communication with your cardiologist is the key. I asked him how long I was going to be on all of these drugs and he explained each one and how long I could possibly be on them. The Plavix he said thre months and it was just a little over two..........there is hope! Sending you hugs and a speedy recovery. Be blessed and be Well~ I wish you
