my husband had a heart attack a few months ago and has had serious insomnia ever since. at first it was anxiety related - waking up with a fright to be relieved that he was still breathing etc. that only lasted for a couple of months and now he simply can't sleep. he says that its not because anything is on his mind, he just lies there and cannot sleep.
has anyone else had this problem? what did you do about it? he is willing to try some stuff but really doesn't want prescribed sleeping pills. he tried melatonin and that just gave him a rash. i would really appreciate any advice you can give. Posted on 01/10/08, 01:01 am |

Hi there
There is a good chance your husband will get back into a good sleep schedule after a short stint of insomnia . I don't know if I would go the route of sleeping pills he probably takes a good amount of heart meds as it is . My heart attack ocurred at 4:37 am and I continued to wake up at about the same time 4:30 to 4:37 for the first 3 months without fail . Betablockers usually take good care of insomnia and I imagine he is on those . Its rather unusual for him to not sleep because the one thing that heart attack will do along with post MI medications is prevent you from being awake lively and energetic . I'd look into the reason a little deeper he could be afraid of a reocurrance and just doesn't realize it . If an Epsom salt bath , massage , herbal tea like chamomile ...or any other home remedy relaxants don't work I would bet there is some anxiety going on there with him .
