Hi.
My name is Rachael I have 3 children my youngest son James aged 2 has allways had severe developmental delays and doesnt say a word. his behavour is getting increasingly worse and his frustration and not being able to communicate has left us all irate,
During tests to discover the cause for the developmental delays and communication problems he had a hearing test on wednesday and the consultant says he is profoundly deaf with only slight reactions to 110db. both me and his dad and his brother and sister are all hearing
Now we have no idea of the cause but im assuming that with profound deafness there is no reality of him regaining any reasonable level of hearing.
Does anyone know whether there is a likelyhood of him ever being able to hear at a reasonable level.
Now onto something else! because of the severe problems we are experiancing a teacher of the deaf came to see us to show me ways to communicate with him and after observing him for a while told me he is using makaton sign language i had no idea he was trying to comunicate with me this way i do not know the difference between the types of language but after watching him I have realised that he learnt this from watching something special on cbeebies and knows the basic's himself.
Its nice now to know that he wants a drink or a ball and will ask me using the signs for them. however there are still problems.
Discovering he is deaf has affected me, How can he lead a normall life i do not know any parents of deaf children so how will he socialise.
Anyway huge thanks for reading this.
Rachael

" There are some great books out there that review choices parents make regarding raising deaf children. One of them is "Choices in Deafness".

Since you are in the UK, I know that BSL (British Sign Language) is used, but I don't know the extent to which ASL is used.

I feel strongly that a deaf child needs access to language and communication that is NOT sound based. In other words - LEARN TO SIGN!

Is your son a CI candidate? That is a possibility. Deaf people everywhere go on to live healthy, happy, fulfilling lives and become doctors, lawyers and business owners, and teachers.

Hook up with your local Deaf Community. They will be your best key to learning sign and can help with advice too. "

" Although a CI is always a possibility I don't recommend this until the child is older and has the ability to choose for himself. Since he may not see himself as "dis" able. I was born with profound hearing loss in my left ear and completely deaf in my right ear. My whole family is hearing. However, I've never wanted a CI since I believe that I'm meant to be the way I am and I can still do anything that anyone else can. (except hear)
I would recommend that you take up signing and make it CRUCIAL that your son knows that he is perfect that way he is. (With or without CI's) "

" give him a coclear implant,
let him choose!!!
if he doesnt like the ci he doesn't have to were it
but dont deprive him of the choice cos he is too young to choose now and it is crucial that they are fitted early for the best chances.
he can lead the life he wants hearing reasonably well with a ci. they really are amazing.

hope this helps "
