I feel so stupid, so stuck between...I don't know how to word it. I am not Deaf. I am not a proficient signer, I understand more than I produce, on the otherhand, I'm not hearing, I can't always hear well and it's so FRUSTRATING. At a conference for teachers and their are interpreters, my FM is not working well and I get too much static. so I hear some and miss some, I watch the interpreter and miss taking notes and look down to take notes and miss more and I feel so ALONE. I'm here to learn to teach kids how to NOT feel alone, how to NOT isolate themselves because they can DO anything...and here I am. Hard of Hearing and Stuck between, feeling stupid and incompetent in either world.

" I agree that HOH sucks. And its a challenge at times. I am not deaf either...I am in between both worlds Sorry to hear you are struggling right now. I am glad that you took the risk to post and to share what is going on with you. It is one way to be with others who understand and that you are not alone.

"How to not feel alone" I feel that we all go thru those alone times. Its part of being human. It took me years to feeling okay being alone with myself. I can see it can be confusing in feeling lonely. "

" I completely commiserate. I'm stuck between the two worlds as well and it is a very lonely feeling and also very easy to feel like we must come across as stupid to other people. I think HOH sucks most of the time. Every single day I'm confronted with something that reminds me of my hearing difficulty, whether it's talking on the phone or talking to a salesperson at a store. Ugh. "

" mine today was a casual lunch meeting at work. I hate having to ask others to take their hands away from their face or repeat, or ask my neighbor "what was that" "

" Wow! I understand what you mean. I really do, even though I am not even HOH as of yet. It's coming though. But my former girlfriend had a profound hearing loss, so I got to experience with her what it is like to be between two worlds. However, I think even for people that can hear, there is the same problem but we just accept it. We shouldn't accept it, because loss of communications is bad for everyone. I have periods where my hearing is perfect and other times where I am asking people to repeat themselves several times, especially on the phone. People often get frustrated and they even sound angry because they have to repeat. On the other hand they get frustrated and angry because they know they told you something but find out what they tried to say was misunderstood. An assumption that you hear everything I say doesn't mean that I really did hear it. I think the hearing and HOH worlds are blending together more because of technology. But we have a ways to go. I am with you on this issue. It's too bad communications can't be easier. "

" HOH does suck at times! My biggest problem is either people who talk too softly (I cannot pick up low pitched noise without hearing aids) or I can't make out certain words people are saying unless they face me directly. What a pain sometimes! "

" Don't I know the feeling. I get so sick of people talking to me like I'm stupid or something. Some people just don't seem to realise that having a hearing loss makes you no different from anyone else. Also annoys me when people giggle when I don't hear something... it's like what do they expect I have a hearing loss. I also feel alone alot as I don't know anyone else who is hard of hearing. The deaf have a wonderful community but us in-betweeners just don't have that. "

" ask for every piece of support you can
it can be difficulti guess
but get a note taker and an interpretor
and get youe fm sorted
i know how annoying fms are ¬¬ i prefer to just have a note taker and watch the interpretor thoough.
as for feeling stuck between i know what you feel
why not make the most out of both worlds
deaf friends and hearing friends; although you may always prefer one side the more friends the better.
haha i wish i took my own advice sometimes...
good luck ^.^ "
