Has anyone dealt with cholesteatoma?
I recently had a tube placed in my left ear. The doctor noticed something different near the ear drum. Today I had a CT scan done on my ear. I hoped to hear next week. It is definite that I will have surgery done. earsurgery.org and audiologynet.com goes into explaining in terms for of us who are not medical savvy. I am not happy about this process. It stirs up feelings from childhood. I deal with PTSD. I journal my experience of being impaired. You are welcome to read. I don't want to re write my story here. It takes alot of emotional energy to go into my story. Posted on 03/26/09, 11:03 pm |

its not too bad. they take out the infected skin and some bones if it be attached, you lose some hearing but it can be replaced with a metal bar of some sort. :)

thank you for responding Scottbeu.
From the Cat Scan report this is not attached to any one of the bones.I am thankful for. But it does need to be removed. I am setup with a surgeon on Wednesday. I am not exactly charmed by the ear doc I had. She is not my regular ear doc. She had told me she would call me with the results. She never did. I had to call the clinic twice to get a response. When she did call she did not introduce herself. I realized it was her after hanging up on the phone. Not good customer service... So I will see what happens on Wednesday.

I did see the surgeon. Surgery is set up for May 12. The process he will go thru my ear canal. Which I am glad he does'nt have go thru back side of the ear. He will remove a quarter of my ear drum. And remove one of the ear bones and put in titanium rod. Remove the cholesteatoma which has'nt affect the boney area. He will take the cartledge from the outer ear and graft it on the mastoid bone.
If all goes well it will be same day surgery. I am scared. I would rather have surgery done on another part of body. Somehow dealing with ears I feel vulnerable. And dealing with anxiety. I thanked the surgeon for explaining the whole process. "He said thats part of my job. I said not all Docs explain whatever is going on with a patient.

I'm sure your surgery will go well, and yes it sounds like you have a good doctor who takes the time to explain things instead of looking at his patient funny when they ask a question.
best wishes, -devin

Surgery went well on Monday. It was same day surgery. The pain level is about 2 up to 6 on the one to ten pain scale. I am not to sneeze or cough with my mouth shut. No bending over and not lifting more than 20 # I until I see my post op appointment next week.
I am feeling whoozy on my feet. Which I can tolerate. Otherwise napping and watch dvd's. I am grateful all went as well.....
