i'm severly deaf and gradually got this way over the period of about 6 years. i was only moderately deaf since age 7. i wear hearing aides but they dont always work in noisey places and i can't hear the conversation so my partner and her family wants to learn with me ASL and we have no where around that teach classes to the community we have a univeristy that has a degree in sign language but you can't take the indivual classes. so how do you go about learning to sign. i have had three classes in my days but they have had none. i know the basic things but sentence structure and all that i have no clue how it suppose to go. if someone has any ideas i greatly appreciate them. tina

" I wish I knew for sure if Indiana had this service because that is where I'm originally from. Anyway, where I am in MN, we have a program through deaf and hard of hearing services called the deaf mentor program, where a deaf adult is paired up with a family (in my case, a hard of hearing teacher) for various reasons. I myself needed to learn better ASL structure. I have a family of a 4 year old who needs to learn sign. She comes into the home and works with anyone in his life that wants to better thier communication with him. Get ahold of you D/HH services and see what is available, you might be surprised what they have to offer. We have several resouces in our area: d/hh services, Lifetrack, mn relay, seems like i'm missing one. Oh well. Good luck, keep us posted. "

" I got a number of books on ASL on Amazon.com, well my parents got them for me. I cant remember the names but maybe you can look on there. These books include sentence structure and have been really helpful. I use them as reference when I cant remember the sign now. "
