i don't understand why im so upset over this...i rented a movie and went to watch it this evening and it didn't have subtitles. it was a stupid chick flick that i didnt even care about, but i got deeply offended kinda by the fact that it didnt have subtitles and for that reason, and that reason alone, i couldnt watch it. im not deaf. well at least not yet. i may never even become completely deaf. but i am hearing impaired and although i can hear noises to an extent, the worst part of my hearing loss is the understanding people part and putting sentences together. it turns out that my cochleas are dramatically malformed and i have an enlarged nerve canal causing extreme difficulty in understanding languages in general and profound hearing loss at certain tones/pitches. this said, i have gotten so good at reading lips (without even realizing it), and being able to hear a fair amount of noises given the volume, i have been able to get away with living a rather unaffected life. so i should be fine right? well, it turns out movies and the phone are the two hardest things for me to keep up with. i can only understand language and hear it at an audible volume out of my right ear therefore i do struggle with the phone if it is too low, or there is a soft spoken person on the other end. but movies, forget it! if an actor turns their head, or if the camera is not on the speaking actor, im lost. but this is such a small part of life that is affected by my hearing loss that i should be happy if anything else that i can hear so well. so why am i so upset over a stupid movie that i couldnt watch bc it didnt have subtitles? does anyone else ever feel this way?

I know hun. I think the whole reason why you feel upset because you know you are hearing impaired and dont like the fact that people are not trying to people with hearing or even visual impairments lives easier. I know how you feel.

I feel for you. My friend used to get so upset, and so did I even though I can still hear, because she couldn't watch good movies. Worst yet, you can't go to the movies! That bites!! I was always asking my friend to go to the moves, but she hardly ever wanted to. When we did go, I would try to interpret some of it for her. But, the cool thing is that my son, is a big movie person and he and I both want to start creating movies with sign language as a regular part of the movie. Not sure how we will do this yet, but we are both committed to it since his mom, my (former) friend is deaf. I still love her and want to do things that will still make her life better, and if I can make her smile I will because we bring better entertainment, then I will do it.

You're not alone. I cannot watch TV or rented movies without subtitles either. I do go to the movie theater sometimes even though they do not provide subtitles. However, I have to do a lot of analyzing of what is going on. But that's how I manage day to day, well, to the extent that I can. I also work in a human resources office and struggle insanely with the phone and insensitive, impatient and disrespectful co-workers on a daily basis just because of my disability. I experience quite a bit of inadequacy issues myself due to my hearing disability. The constant embarrassment of misunderstanding people is sometimes unbearable. My hearing problem is mainly that I cannot differentiate some sounds from others. Like, "S" & "TH" & "F" all sound the same just as "B" & "D" sound the same, for example. I also only have roughly half of the normal hearing, but the differentiation problem makes it so much worse, in my opinion. So, I have to dissect what the person could be saying by the subject matter, the said comment to the relevance of their later comments and other sentences of their conversation. It's draining, I tell ya! So, please, I hope you can take comfort in the fact that you are not alone. It's perfectly understandable to be upset over this. Sometimes, it just gets to be too much.

Turn on the closed captions on your TV. You don't need the subtitles unless you're watching on your computer.

I understand that, I get the same way. I don't have cable or anything so movies are prety much my entertainment when I sit down to relax but when they don't even put subtitles on it just ruins everything, I bought one of my fave tv shows to watch and it didn't have subtitle options so I just had to take it back to the store. I only go to movies occasionally when theres a movie out my boyfriend really wants to go and I don't want to ruin it for him so I just follow along with the movie as best I can.

You have to watch out for the DVDs and old TV series DVDs. Most of them on sale doesn't have the closed captioned emblems on them so I don't buy them. I have had experience even with new DVDs that the close caption doesn't work but they did have subtitles.
Movies, I have tried to use the wireless receiver they provide, sometimes they works, sometimes they don't. Church: my church provides wireless receivers Yes, there are some places that doesn't help unless you ask. For example, during hurricane Gustav, my local TV doesn't have closed caption for the regular news weather section. I sent an email requesting that for emergency weather such as hurricane, please include closed caption, and they did!
