My 11 month old daughter is deaf, her hearing aids aren't helping her, Its not the fact that I feel she needs to be fixed or anything, she is perfect just the way she is, but after talking to a few people that have had there children recive cochlear implants and talking to a lady that has worked with deaf children for over 30 years, she explained to me what the surgery intelled and I always thought It was a lot more drastic then what it trully was, if anyone has any knolegde on cochlear implants please let me know, or any comment!!!!!

Hi velb, I too have a Cochlear Implant but it's not activated yet. They will turn it on 9/11,that will be one month. It's so good to hear you say that you can hear. I have been apprehensive about it and hoping that I too will hear on 9/11.Thank you for the post,it meant a lot to me to hear that you was sucessful with yours.
Hugs Shirley

Hi Shirley,
Don't expect to much initally but as time goes on it will get better, I promise you that. I am just thankful to be able to understand sound again. It was so isolating not hearing, its wonderful now. You don't know what you have until its gone and then you appreciate it, isn't that always the way? Good luck with the programming and be patient with yourself. Lots of hugs!

I am going in for a CI evaluation soon. I have no idea what to expect. If anyone can walk me through the procedure that would be helpful.

My now 10 year old recieved her implant at the age of 3. She is 100 % mainstreamed in school since kindergarten, doing great. Nobody knows she is deaf as her hearing is at normal levels (unless there is a great amount of excess noise-and then who can hear normally) and with the speech therapy her speech is normal as well.
Remember-you will never "fix" her hearing, she will always be deaf. You are just giving her the option to hear.

my son had his cochlear implanted in November 07. His doctor is one of the best in the country so we were lucky on that part. He made it very clear that his hear must be viable for an implant. He did an MRI and it showed that it was perfect for the implant.I think some doctors might get
"cochlear happy" and implant people who don't medically qualify. My advice is to do as much research as possible. The internet is full of wonderful knowledge.
