Degenerative Hearing Loss in the workplace

Hi, I am new to this website, board and hearing loss. I slowly have gotten louder as I got older and just Monday, at the age of 29, I was diagnosed with degenerative hearing loss in both ears. I have to go back for check ups and hearing tests every 6 months for now. I was told my hearing will only get worse and eventually I will lose my hearing all together. It may be 50 years from now, it may be a few years. Apparently, its something with the nerves in my eardrums. My doctor said that eventually I will want to consider other career options b/c I am on the phone all day long. I had to notify my employer of this(people around were complaining that I talk too loud on the phone) and they asked me if there is any headphone set they could purchase to make me hear any better. I have another dr's appointment in 2 weeks where I was going to ask my doctor but I don't want to go in there empty handed. Any help would really be appreciated!

Go to an electronics store and check out their phone headsets.

if you work for a call center they should have a phone eprson. I recommend going through your hr first with dr note. Normaly they can find good headsets.

I am sorry to hear about your hearing loss! To be a fair and equal opportunity employer your boss should help you through the human resourse person where you work They should provide you with phones that help you to hear. You might try a secound opinon as I always think it never hurts. Your hearing loss could be a trigger that you have another underlying problem that could be cured! Then again a voice amplifier could help? You could wear one that looks like a cell phone on your ear .
Would hearing aids help? Perhaps these things might help until you find another job too. Perhaps learning sign language? preparing for the furture and perhaps a health carrer helping those who have what you are diagnosed with. blessings... facing....... I hope this helps in some small way

My hearing is getting worse too, I wear 2 aids now and have tinnitus. I find the aids don't work very well when on the telephone and i gave up my admin job evetually and now work in a shop which is less stessful but harder work physically - on feet all day, working on stock in store room etc, I used to be a Directors PA once , now a sales assistant, but you have to re-assess your life when you have this disability, for me with high pitched tinntus as well as deafness coming on, I could not take minutes at meetings, and my concentration was poorer because of the loud noise. I will not work now as a receptionist or in a call centre as I fear I would not hear all the customer was saying.
good luck to you

There are special headsets being used by the hearing impaired. I heard that some movie theaters keep them on hand - I heard that those with Cochlear implants are using these headsets in theaters and also at home with their TV's. The technology in the headset allows amplification to come to the hearing impaired person but not be heard or perceived by others. I read in Guideposts about a woman who got a pair so she could enjoy concerts, movies and everything everyone else did at a higher amplification. The cochlear implant woman uses hers with the telephone - it puts all speech directly into her processor bypassing her ears - so that must be something different - but the technology is definitely here already.
