I'm the mother of a deaf son. He went deaf just a couple of years ago, about the age of 2, so I'm fairly new to this. I have a question...when talking to someone who is hard of hearing is it appropriate to ask them how they want me to talk to them? I mean, I'm always afraid of talking too fast or too quiet and I get nervous and then I start to mumble. Is it ok to ask how I'm talking? I hope that's not a weird question:)

I don't see a need too, just keep in mind they may not hear everything you say. So just keep your voice up and don't make any sudden movements. Ok joking about the movement. But remember deaf/hoh we are all people and like to chat as we can.

Hi:
Yes, please do this as it is very much appreciated. I also will tell the hearing people how to communicate with me. I tell them right up front (or as soon as it is appropriate) that I am pretty much deaf, that I still speak and I lipread. I also will tell them I know some sign language (if these people know it) to communicate if necessary. You will do fine. With practice, you will be a pro in communicating with hearing impaired/deaf people in no time. Take care... :-)

And you already are a step ahead by taking the initiative to communicate effectively. Being conscious about it and recognizing the differences is a great big win for you and the deaf/hoh person. Thank you for your consideration.
