Laxative dependency :(

Hello,
I am in big trouble. I gave birth to my first baby 4 months ago and got anal fissure after a few days. My doctor prescribed me stimulant laxative. I used it for two weeks then stopped but got hard stool again and fissure was refreshed. I got really scared and used Bisocodyl (stimulant) laxative for almost 3 months. I was using two tablets a day sometimes one a day. When I stopped using tablets I got severe constipation, it was like I knew that my rectum was full but I couldn’t get it out I had to strain. I took another tablet and was able to get urge to pass stool. It’s been 20 days now but my constipation is still there. I have increased fiber and water intake, do not use processed food I go to the bathroom a couple of times but still have to strain a lot. Stool is not very hard but I just can’t seem to get it out. I don’t have severe abdominal pain or vomiting or nausea which could suggest obstruction. I took sulfolax (stool softener) for a week and things got back to a little normal (though I still had to strain a little). After stopping stool softener I am still facing this horrifying constipation. Please help. I don’t seem to get urge to defecate, it feels like my colon has become lazy. I am taking psyllium twice a day, eating fruits and vegetables but things are not helping. Should I retake stool softener but I personally don’t want to as they have other side effects such as electrolyte imbalance and it is mentioned that they are not safe for long term. In addition, I want my bowels to get back to normal as soon as possible. Can anyone suggest me a regimen to regain the normal functioning of bowels without using laxatives, at the same time no straining as I usually develop fissure. (I still have one). HELP! I think you'll really need to ask your doctor about this one.
I know that oats are an extremely good food to gently clean out the digestive system, so maybe a bowl of porridge or muesli every morning for breakfast would help? That's just a suggestion, you really need to speak to your doctor and see what he/she thinks. I hope things improve soon.

You need to stop taking Psyllium in your case. Psyllium is half soluble fiber and half insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber slows digestion because it forms a gel. Insoluble fiber speeds digestion. Right now to much soluble fiber has gunked up your system. Not drinking enough with it also causes this problem.
You need to drink lots of water and eat only insoluble fiber foods.

Also if you can take a few tablepoons of a good flaxseed oil it might lube things up to make it easier on you.

There are natural laxatives. Coffee is actually a laxative. Brown rice is good. Lentils are a good form of fiber. Bananas, pears and apples help some people. There are prunes. Swedish bitters might be helpful. Eating some of these once a day could help, but maybe not overnight. A good yogurt could help rebuild the good bacteria in your digestive system along with the higher fiber diet. I dont mean a sweet type yogurt either. One of the best yogurts I have taken to help my digestion after taking anti-biotics is called Bio-k plus. Not tasty but it is the real stuff. You can take probiotic pills instead. If you are taking some kind of medication, some of those can cause this problem.
Most of this information came out of this article, I hope some of these help. http://tinyurl.com/yaydex9

Ritu...I know what you are going through - i was that way for almost 8 years. I have healed myself now and have been great for 5 years (thank God) Keifer is a good place to start; super seed is by far the best fiber (it is sprouted - made by garden of life). If you would like more details just send me an email to mxangell@yahoo.com - I am an Alternative Health Consultant.

I eat a bowl of oatmeal with chopped prunes added every day to stay regular. If I still have trouble, I might have a weak cup of Dieters Tea or Smooth Move tea and that does the trick.

Thank you all for your suggestions. Things are a little better now I have a BM daily but still have problems with hard stool which is aggravating my fissure. Any suggestions to soften stool naturally
