i have a question.
is trail mix considered a "healthy snack"?

" I think it is, as long as those that have issues with sodium (I actually need more sodium than the average person because of low blood pressure) would buy unsalted products to mix.

My favorite mixture for trail mix would probably be craisins, walnuts, pistachios, almonds, cashews, dried banana chips, other various dried fruit (apricot, papaya, apple are ones I think of first), and coconut.

" I agree with the others. It's important to read the nutrition label on it. Try to find one that has high fiber and lower sugar and sodium where possible. It also depends on what you need to avoid. Whatever kind you try, remember that there are many calories in these snacks. It's healthy true but you may need to control the portion size or if you are trying to control calories, you can really take in a lot of calories from them. I do enjoy them but I have to be careful about the portions. If you don't have a weight problem like me, it may not be a problem for you. I will make some of my mine too and then mix it with oat bran or wheat germ also so it cuts down the calories some & gives me more nutrition from it. I put mine over my no sugar added, low fat pudding for a healthy snack. I also put it over pancakes. with no sugar added syrups. My husband calls it "my healthy junk". "

Mmmmm mixing trail mix in pudding. That sounds scrumptious. And maybe putting it in yogurt would be good too. Vanilla flavored yogurt or plain yogurt with a dollop of your favorite jam in it. Yummm.

I like sweet things. I'm not really a fan of peanuts, though I am thoroughly addicted to peanut butter (I put so much of it on a pb&j) That's why I mentioned nuts besides peanuts. If you're not a peanut fan, you'll find the same problem as me. Most store pre mixed trail mixes have SO many peanuts in them. That's why I think it would be better to make your own and put all your favorite things in them instead of settling for something less.

I have to say my favorite nut ever is honey roasted cashews. Oh man. "

" What ever it takes to get your nuts I think is good. 1 1/2 ounce per day along with a low saturated fat diet may reduce cholesterol and risk of heart attack says the FDA. It can also help lose weight when you replace nuts as part of your fat. They are great fiber and good protein, and low carb. I make my own trail mix. I eat nuts every night with my cocoa. Sprinkle it on my salad and oatmeal.

Pecans is the top nut as far as antioxidants go. They are also one of the top antioxidant foods too and the only nut making the top 20 list. Almonds are high in Vitamin E and monounsaturated fats. Vitamin E always needs Selenium to work best. Both are great antioxidants. Just one Brazil nuts is all you need to get your daily selenium need and lower your risk for certain cancers. Walnuts contain Omega 3. Cashews are the lowest in fats. Pastachios and pecans are high in beta-sitosterol which lowers cholesterol. Pastachios is high in Lutein that great for your eyes. Pine nuts are a good source of copper. "

Instead, make your own mix.
All I carry with me is a bag with a couple dozen raw unsalted plain almonds. Whenever I feel like I want a little something, I just eat an almond.
Mix up different nuts that are not roasted or salted, and you will have a nice healthy snacking mix. "

" nothing wrong with a little trail mix even if it's a bit salty or sugary as long as you manage portions - which can be very difficult with snacks like trail mix - a typical serving size is 1/4 cup. most people don't realize how small a portion that is and easily eat 2-3 times too much or more... which makes it a very unhealthy snack.
i'm with justblue, make your own with unsalted nuts and good dried fruits - watch the fruits tho', very high in sugar, even if it is fruit sugar, still very high.
InvertedBeauty - you're better off with low blood pressure as long as it's low normal, yes - table salts will raise it but at what cost to your arteries and veins and organs and heart itself? all it does is turn everything to concrete. One simple little olive is all it takes to get your RDA of sodium. Want to raise your blood pressure healthily? excersise. raise your heart rate periodically. being only 20 years old, what you do now will set you up for the rest of your life, and blood pressure tends to rise as we age due to stress... so protect yourself now - i've had low bp my whole life, the only thing i have to watch out for are head rushes when i stand too quickly, now that i'm older that's not been an issue, i don't jump up for anyone anymore... lol
