Has anyone here tried juicing to assist with weight loss? I bought a juicer and tried a few vegetable recipes that were not very good to digest. Just looking for suggestions. How to begin, ect..

" Do you mean a juice fast? I can't do that as I need to chew solid food to feel satisfied.
Also alot of people who fast end up bingeing and gaining all the weight back. "

" I have a friend who just started doing this. He lost a couple of pounds in a couple days. He chose to supplement the juicing with meals. There is a very interesting video documentary about a guy who went on a juice fast for 60-days. Google "Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead" and you should be able to watch it for free on the internet. I hope you post back here with your results! "

" Juicing will of course give weightloss, but by juicing you are removing all the fiber and keeping the sugar, so you will feel less full, but still be consuming a whole bunch of sugars. So don't think you can drink all the juice you want. Juices are filled with calories even if made from fresh produce.
Keep in mind that if you aren't making long term changes to your diet, once you stop you will regain the weight. "

" True, if you juice foods that are high in sugar content, like many fruits and even carrots, you can get a spike in blood sugar levels, which isn't very healthy. And yes, there are calories in fruit juice. However, juicing dark leafy greens can be advantageous as it may aid in the absorption of certain nutrients without the sugar spike. For people who don't get enough fruit and veggies in their diets, juicing might be a fun way to supplement the diet. Some people do successfully modify their diets on a long-term basis by incorporating juicing into their diets or even short-term juice fasts as part of their regular routine. But yes, we still need fiber in our diets, so long term juicing alone is not recommended. As well, remember to only make as much juice as you plan to consume, because fresh-squeezed juice can develop harmful bacteria over time. "

" Mstrings is right. Although juicing does still have all the calories as eating the fruit or veggie itself, you can get some health benefits. By juicing every once in a while you also give your body a rest. With juicing you do not have to digest anything and the nutrients are easily absorbed, but if you go all out you may get bloated. Slowly work it into you diet. You could also try green smoothies, which is what I try to do once a day. I LOVE THEM!!! "

" Hey there! I love juicing, I am not doing it to lose weight I'm doing it to get my kids to eat their fruits, but mostly veggies for the day. I do it a couple of times a week (2-3). I usually use baby spinach, carrots, beets, romaine lettuce, cucumbers, kiwis, strawberries, apples and it tastes pretty good. We still follow our same diet, but I recently cut out all junk food/drinks from our diet, and so far things are pretty ok. "

" I juice fast regularly for detox. Fruit juice is a faster detox than green juice and adding greens to your fruit juice will make the greens more palatable and easier to get used to. Maybe start with one juice a day then add another. The idea behind juicing for weight loss is first a detox. Your body will be more able to deal with cleaning up your system if it's not working so hard to digest. Most people who are trying to lose weight by juicing do so with Green juice not fruit juice so the calorie are not an issue.
Be aware that fruit juice fasting can cause detox crisis because of the speed at which you detox. You may feel pain in kidneys or liver and even breakouts as you detox. Its part of the cleaning of your system that will come with your eventual weight loss. Just listen your body . If you start feeling too many effects do some more greens or make an evening smoothie or even do a salad for the meal you feel the most hungry at... For me it's lunch. My family loves a fruit smoothie with a huge handful of spinach in it. they cane even taste the spinach.

As a personal experience with this...I feel healthier than I have ever felt in my life. The weight loss has been gradual because I did not concern myself with losing ...I was in it for the health benefits and was motivated to get past the self indulgence of needing to feel satisfied with food. As I got more nutrition in my body my cravings and desire for food grew less and less. I actually grew to enjoy the flavor of the green juice. This will be different for everyone.

Good luck! "

" I agree with everything you said, hppywme!

I've been drinking about 24 oz of orange juice, juiced with a lime, a lemon, and about one or two inches of ginger root every morning for the last eight months. I haven't had a cold or any illness this year, have felt much healthier (and about 30 years younger), and have much more energy.

I also have been drinking about 60 oz of green juice every day since early January (to replace drinking Pepsi all day) - kale, spinach, parsley, celery, cucumber, green apples, lemon, and ginger root. This basic recipe can be found at the Fat Sick & Nearly Dead Facebook page at the FAQ link at the top of the page.

As far as foods, I've been eating mostly raw foods (shredded cabbage, romaine lettuce salads, etc) instead of meat, dairy, breads, processed foods, sugars, and general junk food -- about 90% of the time. It's made an amazing difference in my health.

The FS&ND Facebook page is a great place for support and ideas. They also have a web site at www.jointhereboot.com, where you can find lots of recipes and "reboot" plans to get healthy, have more energy, and reverse many illnesses and diseases.

You can watch the Fat Sick & Nearly Dead documentary online for free at (if you're in the USA):

Many people are curious why they should drink juice and how doing that will help them to feel healthier. There are a lot of misconceptions about drinking fresh juices in order to get healthier.

In summary:

Juicing helps to regenerate, detoxify, and hydrate the cells and organs in your body. Eating or drinking high-water-content fruits, drinking nutrient-dense green leafy plant and vegetable juice, and eliminating the hard-to-digest foods (meats, breads, dairy, sugars, and processed foods) helps to give the digestive system a rest, so the regeneration, detoxification, and hydration processes will work more effectively and faster. The third very important factor is to drink lots of water every day to hydrate your joints, cells, and organs and to avoid constipation. "

" Congrats dla111! That is awesome! You must feel great!!

Good discussion on this thread. I am motivated to go out now and try a new juice recipe. I purchased the Juice Lady's Turbo Diet book a while ago and I have only referred to it once or twice. I usually make my own concoctions. However, I found some interesting recipes in there that I might try. "
