Advice:
What would be examples of a healthy breakfast?

I have no idea of how to take care of myself and want to do better. Right now for breakfast everyday I have an eggo strawberry waffle (with butter and syrup), 3 pieces of bacon, I packet of grits (with butter) and half a glass of 2% milk. Is that a really terrible breakfast and how can I do better? I like something warm for breakfast. I hardly ever eat lunch. Supper I can't do anything about since hubby has to have what he calls "meat, taters and vegables (vegetables). So I really want to eat healthy for breakfast at least. Thank you very much for any suggestions.

" Hi, yes this is probably not the best breakfast choice. Your breakfast is full of sugar and fat, which isn't providing any nutritional value for you. If you want a warm breaky try having eggs on toast (brown bread if you can) great for protein , or some warm oats which are nice and high in fibre, the glass of milk is fine if thats what you prefer it has calcium and protein.
Genrally breakfast should consist of protein and fibre, not just carbs. This will ensure that you get a consistant release of energy to make you feel fuller longer rather than a quick burst of sugar which will leave you feeling hungry sooner.
Don't skip lunch, at least have something light like a salad, or crakers with low fat cheese spread, or maybe a yoghurt.
Your dinner is fine, maybe try swapping the meat around to include chicken and fish too. and make sure you have plenty of coloured vegies on your plate. Your dinner plate should be half oloured vegies (peas, corn, carrots, brocoli etc) and one quarter carbs (potato or rice or pasta etc) and one quarter meats/ protein (beef, lamb, chicken, fish eggs etc)
I hope this gives you some ideas :) "

" Thank you CharisK!! I know it sounds silly that at 48 I don't know how to eat properly. But I've been busy struggling with other stuff most of my life and just grabbed whatever was handy and tasty to eat, giving no thought to nutrition. As I read your suggestion it started making me hungry and I'm so glad that it sounds really good and do-able. I was afraid someone would write in and say to eat something yuky like bulgar wheat muffins or bean sprouts. I like all the stuff you suggested. And the yoghurt for lunch will be good because it's not enough food to slow me down. I'm looking forward to feeling better about what I eat and not having that draggy afternoon rundown feeling anymore. And everything you mentioned is quick and easy to fix. Thank you so much, love that idea! "

" How about peanut butter on wheat toast, oatmeal...Quaker has a great High Fiber instant, Turkey breakfast sausages for a change of pace from bacon. I make french toast with Sara Lee white wheat bread and eggbeaters...cook in pan sprayed with Pam.

My Hubby is a meat and tater guy too...but I take more veggies than potatoes and meat. I try to serve chicken and fish 4-5 days a week and beef/pork1-2 days. And one day is meatless....think beans! "

" I love veggie eggs. I have veggies in all my meals. I steam some in with a small amount of water in the same pan that I cook my egg whites (or egg sub). Any veggies will do. Red Peppers, Brussels sprouts. Carrots, Cauliflower (colored ones), Garlic, Tomatoes, Onions, Eggplant, Spinach, Asparagus, Summer or Winter Squash, Avocados, Broccoli, Fennel, Yams or Mushrooms are examples. Eat lots of COLOR.

I sometimes add bits of soy sausage, fresh herbs (basil and parsley is my favorite) or fat free cheese or home made salsa to the eggs.

I serve the eggs with long cooking oatmeal that I added a apple, cinnamon and nuts. I make enough for everyone for 3 or 4 days and bag it up. This makes my life easier.

This would be a Zone meal.

One a busy morning I stir in fat free cottage cheese into my oatmeal with more slices of fresh fruit. "
