I get emails from the Obama camp updating me on their progress in pushing through the reforms with requests for people to get involved in a co-ordinated front.. Here is the latest buletin.. for those who would like to get involved...
"Inka -- After months of negotiations, the health reform debate is about to move to the full Congress for the first time. With the insurance industry lobby pulling out all the stops to derail progress, we need everyone who supports reform to weigh in. So here's the plan: Set a new OFA record by getting 100,000 calls to Congress placed or committed to on a single day. On Tuesday, October 20th, OFA volunteers will gather at "Time to Deliver" call parties and neighborhood outreach events across the country. We'll get together in living rooms and public locations, and reach out to friendly voters whose voices are particularly critical in this debate. We'll talk to them about the President's plan and then we'll ask them to call on their representatives to support reform. President Obama will be joining a call party and then speaking directly to all the other events that evening via an exclusive live webcast, sharing the latest info on the fight for reform and our campaign for change. It's an ambitious plan -- and it depends on you. Find a "Time to Deliver" event near you, or sign up to host one in your area. Time to deliver Participating (or hosting) is surprisingly easy. No special experience is required, and we'll provide simple step-by-step instructions. You'll gather with friends, neighbors, and OFA supporters from nearby, and together you'll have a great time while making a huge difference. We're closer to health reform now than we've ever been, but we must not take anything for granted. The insurance industry is throwing millions of dollars a day and an army of lobbyists at Congress to stop reform. If we can get 100,000 calls to Congress placed or committed to on a single day it will ensure the people's voices are heard louder than the lobbyists -- but it won't be easy. Everything hinges on folks like you stepping up and joining in. Can we count on you? Please sign up to attend or host a Time to Deliver event on October 20th: http://my.barackobama.com/AttendTTD Thanks for making it happen, Jeremy Jeremy Bird Deputy Director Organizing for America" Posted on 10/16/09, 03:10 am |

Our country really needs health care insurance reform! We spend way more per capita than most of the world and have poorer outcomes. I have traveled extensively through dozens of countries on 5 continents and our system is terrible. Only 3rd world countries like Nepal have it worse. In Poland, a doc will come to you on your schedule. In Italy, I was in and out of a hospital with meds within an hour-- no charge for anything. Insurance should not be tied to employment because we no longer live in a society where people work at only 1 company their whole lives. The sicker / more hurt someone is, the less likely they are to be employed in the first place. Pre-existing conditions and being dropped are huge problems. Insurance should be a service like the fire dept, police, libraries, streets, military, schools. Let's build it into the tax structure and x out these greedy insurance companies that profit off of denying care to our sick and vulnerable citizens! Thanks for staying informed and posting this.

Thanks for being so articulate ChronicIL. I'm not optimistic. I saw Al Gore on Rachel Maddow's show and he said he believed Obama would have a bill on his desk to sign by Christmas. That really would be a merry christmas. People talk about how thick the bill is. All bills are that thick because our country has been passing law and building upon them for over 200 years. You have to include a legislative history. That alone is hundreds of pages. Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, the fact that these men are taken seriously in the U.S. makes me sad for this country. God bless Obama! He has the promise to be up their with Lincoln!

I have to wonder which Congressmen have taken the time to read through all 2000 pages of this "reform" bill. Do people realize that not everyone will be covered. That employers will opt out of their present insurance and go for the public option. This will cause health care cost to be sky high. People will lose jobs because employers cannot afford insurance, people cannot afford insurance so jobs are going to be lost because the government will demand employers pay penalties they cannot afford without cutting jobs. You think this "health-care reform bill" is the answer all, but it is not. Just another way for the government to take over more of our lives.

As I am from the Uk.. I really wonder at how afraid some of you guys are about all of this. Counties that have a national health system have seen everyone benefit from it and would not go back to the dark ages for anything. I don't know of anywhere where anyone is excluded from existing systems and would be very surprised if this happened in the US. Nowhere in the world are health costs as high as in the US.. everything costs you so much more than anywhere else. Private health insurance in the UK, for those that chose to have it, costs a fraction of what you pay and isn't considered vastly superior, as you get the same doctors in both areas and major procedures are usually carried out in NHS hospitals anyway, which are the best equipped.
We do not worry about the cost of becoming ill.. not for ourselves, our loved ones, our neighbours, nor even for visitors to our country. The cost of this is nothing compared to the benefits of living a life free of worries over the most fundamental needs of a civilized society. xxx
