This fairly recent publication by T.R. Reid explains why American healthcare is so insanely expensive while accomplishing less than a lot of other systems, and how countries with all different kinds of national healthcare plans manage to provide medical attention to everyone who needs it at a much lower price than we do. It's very readable, very understandable, and does not force the author's opinion down the reader's throat. As a journalist he has lived all over the world, and his method was not only to interview policymakers, doctors and patients in different systems, but to take himself in as a patient and see what treatments were recommended in the UK, Canada, Japan, India, Germany, and France for his bum shoulder, and how much it would cost.
He lays out a LOT of possible strategies used by other systems, and he does not rule out the idea that we can come up with our own system from scratch if we want. His point is, our system is ridiculous and getting worse. |
