Advice:
Removal of neck lymph nodes?
Watch this
View More Posts Ignore
Hello! I'm new here and hoping for advice and support.

My husband was diagnosed with Oral Cancer in 2/2010. He had 35 Radiations and 3 Chemos. All test and scans have been clear UNTIL this past December. My husband noticed a spot on his tongue and after a biopsy, it was positive. He has since had the spot removed, with clean margins and a clear PET scan.

Because microscopic cancer cells can not be seen in the lymph nodes in a PET scan his ENT doctor is suggesting removal of the lymph nodes on the left side of his neck. This would be precautionary only because they say if it comes back, that is where it would go.

We are going to UVA for a second opinion but I was wondering, does anyone here know about this or had it done? Results? Any help or opinions are welcome!!!

" My cancer had already spread to my lymph nodes when they detected it. It had started on the left tonsil. They removed approximately 30 lymph nodes on the left side. Unsure of a precautionary removal of the nodes as which ones do you take? With the advances in treatment maybe this is a new tool in the fight. My surgery went well with little side effects. My ENT only does a visual monitor with bianual xrays of the chest as he feels that if it comes back, it would be to the lungs. He also stresses that self monitoring is really the best way to detect.....swelling, pain, or difficulty swallowing. I know this is late and you probably have already made a decision so I hope for you that everything went well. "

" My husband had stage 4 cancer of the base of the tongue. It had spread to his lymphoid on on side and the top of his lung. he did not have any surgery. He had radiation and chemo. He is 2 1/2 years out of treatment. So far so good. I still want to say that you have to talk to your doctor and make a choice on what you are comfortable with. Hang in there. "

" I had cancer on my left tonsil. Pet scan showed it was isolated there (I did not know it wouldn't show up in the scan!)
But, dr did remove 3 lymph nodes on my neck - all were clean. He said margins around the cancer were clear too.
I had slight nerve damage on that side from the node removal, but after one year, I am almost back to 100% "
