Loose Bowels

Question: I've had very loose bowels since I changed to the Norvir, Truvada, and Reyatz. In fact, I have diahhrea about 4 times a week average, not to mention more gas than ever. My doctor seemed concerned about this and we discussed changing meds. I go for my 6 mo. appt. in a couple weeks and plan to bring it up again. I'm just hesitant to start different meds because I have a very hard time adjusting.
Anyone else have this same problem? Posted on 09/05/09, 09:09 am |

I am on those very same meds and have the gas problem. Occasional loose bowels too. I see my doctor next month, so will ask her about it. Would much rather have these side-effects than those I got whilst on Atripla... *shiver*

My partner had the same issues, except that he was on Kaletra and Truvada. The diarrhea was unbearable for him. He did some research and talked to some people with similar issues, and it seemed that a lot of people were switching to Isentress. He talked to his doctor and they replaced the Kaletra with Isentress. He's been on Isentress and Truvada for three weeks now. The gas and runny stomach stopped almost immediately after Kaletra was removed. Maybe Isentress can be an option for you. If not, Immodium AD is what he used to take to have somewhat normal movements, but that was just a band-aid fix. Good luck to you.

I am on isentress, norvir, truvada and prezista... oh and bactrim. Lethal combination. I chew 3 or 4 oat bran pills in the morning, and that HELPS... (believe it or not...) and if I'm going somewhere like on a long drive or out to a movie or out to dinner... I just take two immodium AD about an hour before, just to be safe.
I think that's a good option if you can't change your meds. Immodim AD has been a social saver for me! :)

Thanks for all the tips everyone! I can relate to "close calls" as several others have. I intend to ask my doctor to steer me in the right direction, be it over the counter or prescribed.

Tim,
I am on the same 3 pills. My doctor says it is ok to take amodium daily as needed. It helps.

I have been the human soft-serve machine now going on 4 months. I have had a colonoscopmy, where a few polyps were removed and a biopsy that was negative. Does not matter what I eat or don't eat, and fiber suppliment not helping. I see the GI Spec. this morning for a follow-up after my hospital stay last month. I sure hope they can get to bottom of things--mind the pun ;-)
