Stomach pain and meds

I've been on two different combinations since beginning of April '09. First, Truvada, Norvir and Reyataz, and then switched to Truvada and Sustiva (Atripla). Anyway, about a month into my treatment, I started to feel a slight pain in my stomach, just above the right hip. It's been there ever since, not all the time, and certainly not mega-painful... just a niggling kind of pulsing pain every now and then.

Is this kind of pain common with ARVs??? Has anyone else had any similar experiences in particular with stomach pain???

My doctor doesn't think it is appendicitis, and is sending me for a scan early next week to rule out other explanations.

" Yes! I used to take Reyataz, and I still take truvada and norvir. I get this pain on my stomache right around my diaphram area. I've missed my last couple of doctors appointments, so on my next one I plan on asking him.

It's not nausea though, right? Cuz mine isn't. It's kind of like someone is taking that area and just... i dunno... squeezing it really tight? I don't know if that's the best way to describe it, but it's the only way I can think of right now.

Let me know what your doc says! "

" Will be watching this thread with interest. Been on Atripla for 10 months now. I've had the same squeezing sensation that DoorMatt describes for several days now. For me, it extends from just under the ribcage to just over my hip on the right side. I've had a history of abdominal pain, so I'd not given this little nuisance much thought. Do please let us know what you find out, centaur? :) "

" I switched from Atripla to Reyataz, Truvada, and Norvir. I am now getting the same pain that you describe. I go to see my doctor first week in July, and will talk to him about it then. Let me know what you here ok! "

" Thanks for the replies. :)

Sorry you're all experiencing the same kind of sensation. DoorMatt, it's definetly not nausea and it is like you describe it... a tightening feeling... sort of pulses in the lower right stomach area, but sometimes spreads to the top of the hip or the base of my back. The only way I can get rid of it, is to either sit it out, stretch my body to the left hand side or curve my spine. It is weird!

I'll let you all know what the outcome is next week. My doctor thinks that it might be the Truvada... since that's the only thing that has remained constant in my regimen.

I was initially a bit worried that I might have kidney stones but think that would be a very different type of pain.

Puzzled! "

" Oh, I also meant to say that my doctor does think it is my body adjusting to my meds. She said that my meds can initially give spasms or unexplained pain that usually subsides over time. "

" Weird. I'm interested in seeing what my doc has to say, too. Because I've been on Truvada since I started meds, too, which has pretty much been about a year, but I've only started noticing this pain like, 4 months ago, but it's like clockwork that I get it now in the mornings, and there's always some kind of remnant of it throughout the day. " I have had the same feelings. I wondered if it was kidney stones, or my appendix. I think I am a big worry wart sometimes :) "

" I experienced the same sensation. It goes away over time. I found yoga helped a great deal "

" Yoga sounds like a plan. I'm trying to become more healthy, so might go down that route at some point.

Well... I got my scan yesterday. Doctor scanned my stomach, asking me to cough lots (apparently, if it's a hernia then the hernia if more likely to show up on the scan when a person coughs) and she told me that there was nothing there whatsoever. Soo... i'm thinking that it must be the meds, but my HIV doctor needs to see the scans first and get back to me on what her opinion is. The good thing is that the pain hasn't been so frequent lately.

BTW, the gel they use for ultrasound is soooo cold. Urgh! "
