What causes night sweats?

I was just wondering why it is that HIV+ people have night sweats... what is it that makes that happen?

And also, does anyone have good advice on how to stop it?

Not sure what causes it. The virus itself I'm told. I'm undetectible, yet every once and a while I sweat like a farm animal. I find drinking lots of water before bed helps. "

" Undetectable as well but still have phases of night sweats, and what is really really weird; I have always ONLY sweated like a pig from my HEAD! I sleep on a temperpedic mattress and pillow, have tried ALL different pillows to none...shaved head once Summer of 08 was so annoyed by it. I still sweat. IF hiv were to be manmade, I think whomever the genetic splicing researcher was that added the "pinch of night sweats from the head only', is STILL in a straight-jacket someplace laughing. maybe strange, but how I deal with this oddity. TRY asking your ID Dr. why night sweats happen? My Dr. just says, "Yeah, you're one of those sweaters!" At least we are not having Stigmata instead! LOL "

Even if there isn't anything a person can do about it, I still would like to know what the specific cause is. Like, is it because a lowered T-cell count causes the pores to excrete large amounts at one time while the body is sleeping? Or whatever?

I would just like to know the logistics. "

I have an under sheet mattress protector from IKEA that draws moisture into it., use good quality cotton sheet and hollowfiil rather than down quilts or cotton blankets.

Drinking less before bed helps - as does having a little fatty snack - like cheese or milky drink. I think this is to do with matabolising ARVs.

Also I get sweats more when i am stressed or running an infection. When this happens I steam, sauna, swim till the sweats go.

" I have tried those things as well, and very good advice as well! Never helped me, so since I prefer it cooler ALL the time, now that Fall is here, fresh air from open window helps a bit. I think it must be like everything else with hiv, everyone's experience seems personalized! "
